Seeking Guidance for Hair Fall and Regrowth - #45909

Kavya

Here is the English translation of what you wrote: --- I have a hair fall problem. When I was in school, I used to oil my hair regularly and keep it in braids. After school, I started oiling only before washing my hair. Earlier also I had hair fall, but not this much. Now it has increased a lot. Literally after every wash, when I see so much hair fall, I get very stressed. After drying my hair, more than 100 strands fall out. I really don’t know the exact reason. I am trying to improve my lifestyle too. I don’t understand what to do. How should I do oiling? Should I oil 2 hours before wash or keep it for the whole week? After that, I am confused about shampoo – which one is best and safe? What should I use to stop hair fall and for regrowth? Please guide me properly

Doctors' responses

To address your hair fall concerns, understanding the root cause is important. In Ayurveda, hair fall can often be linked to imbalance of Pitta dosha or disturbances in the body’s nutrient assimilation processes. Frequent hair washing or using harsh shampoos might also exacerbate the problem.

Start by incorporating regular oiling into your hair care routine. Using a combination of Bhringraj and coconut oil can be particularly beneficial. This blend can cool the scalp and promote healthy growth. Apply the oil gently to your scalp and hair, preferably at night before you sleep; this allows the oil to penetrate well. If overnight oiling isn’t possible, try at least a few hours before washing.

Regarding frequency, once or twice a week should suffice. More frequent oiling might help in some cases, especially if your scalp feels dry often, but always adjust based on your comfort and skin response.

When selecting a shampoo, opt for something gentle and natural, free of Sulphates or Parabens. Shikakai and Reetha based natural cleansers are often recommended in Ayurveda as they cleanse the scalp without stripping natural oils. Post washing, avoid hot water and let your hair air dry.

Internally, consider balancing your Pitta with dietary adjustments. Include cooling foods like cucumber, sweet fruits like melons and a bit of ghee daily for its nourishing properties. Keep spicy, fried or overly sour foods to a minimum to control excess Pitta.

Also, stress management is key. Techniques such as regular yoga, meditation and Pranayama (breathing exercises) can significantly alleviate stress, which in turn can reduce hair fall. Aim to get adequate rest, as quality sleep aids in the body’s overall regeneration processes.

If these measures don’t bring an improvement or if hair fall is drastic, seeking personalized consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner could offer a deeper assessment. They may suggest detoxification therapies (Panchakarma) if deemed necessary, tailored to your specific constitution and doshic imbalance.

Hair fall can be distressing, and from a Siddha-Ayurvedic view, it’s important to look at balancing doshas and strengthening the sapta dhatus. Hair fall is often related to an imbalance in Vata and Pitta doshas, as well as a weakening of the asthi (bone) and majja (nervous) dhatus. Let’s address your concerns one by one.

Oiling is fundamental in Ayurvedic hair care. It’s typically best to oil your hair about an hour or two before washing it. This allows the oil to penetrate the scalp and nourish it without causing excessive greasiness or attracting dirt. Ideally, use oils like sesame or coconut oil—both are cooling and can help soothe the scalp, reducing Pitta. Warming the oil slightly before applying can also enhance absorption.

When it comes to shampoo, opt for ones with herbal ingredients like amla, bhringraj, or reetha that cleanse without stripping away natural oils. Avoid shampoos with harsh chemicals, as they can aggravate the Vata and Pitta doshas. Herbal shampoos that have a neutral pH are generally safer.

For hair regrowth, experiment with making a paste of fenugreek seeds (methi) soaked overnight; apply this paste to your scalp once a week. Fenugreek can strengthen hair follicles and promote growth. In terms of lifestyle, ensure your diet includes adequate hydration and foods that nurture and build dhatus, particularly healthy fats like ghee and foods rich in iron and zinc. These nutrients support hair strength and can help prevent premature graying and loss.

Addressing lifestyle factors like stress is vital too. High stress can increase the release of cortisol which impacts hair health. Regular practice of yoga, pranayama, or simple daily walking can help moderate this.

If you’ve made lifestyle changes and the problem persists, consider consulting a Siddha-Ayurveda practitioner to explore personalized treatment options. Hair fall could indicate an underlying issue that requires a more tailored approach.
