Seeking Guidance on Transitioning from Magnesium to Triphala for Bowel Health - #48934

Aaron Meyler

Hi valued doctors. I have been trying really hard to break the dependency I have developed towards magnesium oxide to help bowel movements. It has been really really hard as I have had several major health insults along the way. Last July I woke up with complete urinary retention and was catheratised for nearly 3 weeks with heavy antibiotics , the following morning after the catheter procedure I experienced a complete shut down of my bowels for the first time in 45 years. To cut a long story short the onmy thing that worked to get me moving was high strength magnesium oxide as high as 1000mg elemental a night which admittedly became a crutch for over 2 months as I was terrified of losing bowel function again. In November I was diagnosed with an other nasty uti and more antibiotics which massively set me back and I found out I had elevated magnesium levels so I immediately tried to lower the dose to 750mg which was fine, then to 500mg which caused loss or delayed morning urge for about 2 weeks during this time after the latest antibiotics I was experiencing rectal discomfort not pain but a horrible sensation like my nerves were firing and it's been going on ever since. I have since reduced the magnesium to 375mg but I had started having really insignificant passing. My is the last two nightsi added 1 teaspoon of triphala powder and yesterday and this morning I had the most normal stools in 4 months, but I am concerned I am. Just swapping one crutch for another, reduced magnesium and replace it with something else. Is this a safe and logical ayurvedic practice yo try and replace the magnesium with the Triaphla or could I potentially become dependent on that stimulas aswell. What I do know is since I added 1 teaspoon of triphala the last 2 nights my stool form as been the most normal formed in months. What's the next logical step and does this show that I maybe moving back towards bowel independence at some point in the future? Thank you for everything you do kind regards Aaron

Hello Aaron, I get what you’ve been through, and it sounds rough. Catheterization, those strong antibiotics, not being able to pee, and your gut shutting down? That’s a major shock to your system. Anyone would do what you did just to get by. You didn’t create a bad habit; you were fixing a system that had crashed. What happened to your gut (the Ayurveda way of seeing it) What you had was a classic Vata problem: * Catheter + antibiotics → dry, irritated colon * Nervous system freaking out → gut and brain not talking to each other * Result → Apana Vata paralysis (can’t feel the urge to go, poor bowel movement, nerves in your rectum not working right) Magnesium oxide works by forcing water into your gut. It skips the nerves and muscles. It makes you go even if your colon isn’t working. So: * Magnesium = artificial help * Triphala = fixing things naturally That’s why you got hooked on magnesium, but you won’t with Triphala. Why Triphala made you poop normally Triphala does 3 things that magnesium can’t: – Fixes the nerves in your colon – Gets things moving properly again (the natural way) – Puts moisture back where it should be So, the fact that you had your first normal poops in 4 months isn’t just luck – it’s a sign your gut is waking up. That means: – Your bowel isn’t frozen anymore – it’s learning how to work again. Will you need Triphala forever? No – and here’s why: Magnesium: * Pulls water in * Doesn’t fix your nerves * Makes it harder to go on your own over time Triphala: * Gets your nerves talking again * Makes your colon stronger * Helps you feel the urge to go In Ayurveda, it’s called: Anulomana – getting things moving the right way Not Rechana– forcing things out That’s why it’s okay to use Triphala safely for years without getting hooked. What your stools says about what’s going on You said: * Going every day * Soft but solid * Best poops in 4 months since starting Triphala This means: * Your Apana Vata is getting better * The nerves in your rectum are working again * Your gut isn’t depending on chemicals anymore This is what it looks like when your bowel is starting to work on its own What to do now (important!) * Don’t just stop taking magnesium all of a sudden. * Don’t take more Triphala too quickly. Here’s how to wean yourself off safely Nighttime routine For 2 weeks: * Magnesium 375 mg * Triphala 1 tsp in warm water after dinner Then: * Reduce magnesium to 250 mg * Keep Triphala the same Then: * Magnesium every other night * Triphala every day Eventually Just Triphala This lets your nerves take over without freaking out. How long until you’re fully independent? Based on what you said: * Your gut already responded in 48 hours * That means your colon isn’t broken – just stunned Most people like you get back to normal in: * 6–10 weeks That nerve firing feeling That feeling is:Nerves healing It’s uncomfortable, but it’s a sign of healing, not damage. You’re moving from: Chemical help → natural repair That’s real healing. And yeah – this totally shows you’re getting your bowel back on track Warm Regards Dr. Snehal Vidhate

Aaron, thank you for sharing your journey so clearly—it’s evident how much effort you’ve put into regaining bowel stability after such difficult health events. Let me break this down from an Ayurvedic perspective, while also keeping safety in mind. 🌿 Triphala vs Magnesium Oxide - Magnesium oxide works as a strong osmotic laxative—it pulls water into the bowel, forcing movement. Long-term, it can cause electrolyte imbalance and dependency. - Triphala (a blend of Haritaki, Bibhitaki, Amalaki) is considered a Rasayana (rejuvenative). It doesn’t just stimulate evacuation; it tones the colon, supports digestion, and gradually restores balance. - Dependency risk: Triphala is not typically habit-forming in the same way as magnesium oxide. Ayurveda sees it as corrective rather than purely stimulatory. However, if taken in high doses for years, the bowel may “expect” it—so the goal is to use it as a bridge while strengthening digestion (Agni). ✅ Signs You’re Moving Toward Independence - You’ve reduced magnesium significantly (from 1000 mg → 375 mg). - With just 1 tsp Triphala, you’re now passing soft, formed stools daily—that’s a big improvement. - The fact that stool form normalized suggests your colon is responding to ge 🌿 Next Logical Ayurvedic Steps - Continue Triphala at ½–1 tsp at night with warm water. Once stable for a few weeks, you can taper to alternate nights. Agni Deepana (digestive fire strengthening): - Pippali (long pepper) 1–2 pinches with honey before meals. - Hingvastak churna ½ tsp with warm water after meals if bloating persists. Dietary support: - Warm, cooked vegetarian meals (khichdi, rice + moong dal, lightly spiced vegetables). - Add soaked raisins, figs, or dates daily for natural bulk. - Avoid cold/raw foods, excess dairy, and heavy fried items. Routine: - Morning hydration: 1 glass warm water on waking. - Gentle yoga: Pawanmuktasana, Vajrasana after meals, Anulom Vilom pranayama. Gradual tapering: Once stools remain consistent, reduce Triphala frequency. The aim is not to stop suddenly but to let your bowel adapt. Warm Regards DR. ANJALI SEHRAWAT

Aaron based on your detailed history it is clear that your bowel function has been significantly impacted by past urinary retention, prolonged catheterization, repeated antibiotics and high dose magnesium oxide use These factors together have likely caused temporary disruption of your bowel nerve signaling and motility leading to dependence on external stimulants Using Triphala in your case is a very safe and traditional Ayurvedic approach for supporting natural bowel movements Triphala works by gently regulating digestion and improving bowel tone rather than acting as a harsh stimulant like high dose magnesium oxide It is considered nourishing, balancing Vata in the colon, supporting detoxification and improving regularity over time and it is highly unlikely to create dependency in the way magnesium oxide can Since you are already observing normal stool form after using one teaspoon of Triphala at night it indicates that your bowel function is starting to normalize and that your gut is gradually regaining its natural motility This is a positive sign that you are moving back towards bowel independence The next logical step would be to continue Triphala at the same safe dose and observe your bowel function over 1 to 2 weeks You can try gradually spacing out magnesium oxide doses further under supervision and eventually discontinue it once Triphala alone maintains regular, soft, formed stools Supporting this with gentle lifestyle measures will help Ensure you maintain a light, warm, cooked diet rich in fiber, stay hydrated with warm water, include healthy fats like ghee and oils to lubricate the colon, and gentle daily movement such as walking or yoga to stimulate bowel motility Avoid overuse of laxatives or harsh stimulant medications Over time as your nervous system and colon regain normal function your natural bowel urges should return and dependence on magnesium or even Triphala will likely not be required Triphala acts more as a supportive tonic than a crutch so continued use while your bowel retrains is considered safe Monitoring stool consistency, frequency and urge is important and keeping a small diary will help you observe progress Consistent gentle practice along with Ayurveda dietary support is the most reliable path back to bowel independence

HELLO, Your problem did not start in the intestines alone. A sequence of events shocked the pelvic nerve- gut system 1) ACUTE URINARY RETENTION+ CATHETERISATIO -this strongly disturbs the pelvic nerves -In Ayurveda, this area is governed by Apana Vata (the energy responsible for urination, defecation, ejaculation) 2) REPEATED STRONG ANTIBIOTICS -they damaged gut bacteria -they dry and irritate the colon -they weaken the gut’s natural rhythm 3) SUDDEN BOWEL SHUTDOWN -This happens when nerve signalling between brain-gut-pelvic flor is disrupted -fear then reinforces this shutdown (a vicious loop) 4) CHRONIC USE OF MAGNESIUM OXIDE -helped evacuation but bypassed natural urge -overtime, the colon became passive 5) CURRENT RECTAL"NERVE FIRIN" SENSATION -This is irritated Vata + mild pitta -Think of it like a hypersensitivity wire, not damage This is functional and reversible, not structural disease TREATMENT GOALS -restore natural urge perception -re-educate colon nerves -lubricate and soothe bowel wall -calm pelvic vata -gradually Remove fear based dependence Ayurveda treats function before force INTERNAL MEDICATION 1) TRIPHALA CHURNA= 1 tsp at bedtime with warm water for 8 weeks then taper slowly = regulate Apana Vata, tones colon nerves, improves stool form and urge coordination DEPENDENCY? -No,when tapered -it restores function instead of replacing it 2) GHEE (very important but often missed) =2 tsp daily with warm rice, or early morning with warm water for 6 weeks =lubricates colon, nourishes irritated nerves, calms Vata and pitta together 3) MAGNESIUM (transitional only) -safety net while nerves recover =reduce only when urge appear natural, never reduce out of fear testing EXTERNAL THERAPIES 1) WARM OIL MASSAGE= SESMAE OIL + CASTOR OIL -lower abdomen, lower back, sacral area -gentle clockwise circles, 10-15 min before bed =directly calms pelvic Vata, improves nerve communication, reduces rectal hypersensitivity LOCAL HEAT -warm water bottle on lower abdomen at night -reduces nerve hyper alertness DIET -warm, cooked meals -rice, oats, khichdi -stewed vegetables -ripe bananas, papaya -yogurt or buttermilk -ghee and olive oil AVOID -raw salads -cold drinks -excess fibre suddenly -dry snacks -artificial sweetners -excess caffeine Fibre should be soft and soluble not rouh LIFESTYLE RULE -Regular timing= eat and sleep at same time daily -No forceful straining -Never suppress urge -Do not obsessively monitor stools -Walk daily= esepically after meals YOGA ASANAS -pawanmuktasana -malasana -apanasana -cat cow PRANAYAM -deep abdominalbreathing -nadi sodhana -bhramari Avoid aggressive breathwork SIMPLE REMEDIES -warm water sip in morning -soaked raisins 6-8 overnight -stewed apple at night -fennel + cumin tea after meals SIGNS OF HEALING -morning urge returning -less anxiety around stools -normal shape and softness -reduce rectal sensation -ability to reduce supports slowly Healing is gradual and. on linear You did not break your bowels You experienced a temporary nervous system shock Your response to triphala is a strong sign of reversibility Independence does not come from removing all support fast- it comes from using the right support correctly, then letting it go slowly DO FOLLOW HOPE THIS MIGHT BE HELPFUL THANK YOU DR.
