How to naturally cure monthly dysmenorrhea - #20238

Emerald
$1.17

Hi, Doc. How do I cure my monthly dysmenorrhea? I am already in my early 40's. I usually get menstrual cramps a week before my period since high school. The first two days of my period are also painful; usually the second day is the most painful that I have to take NSAIDs (500g of mefenamic acid) just to ease the pain, or else I'd just be in bed the whole day.

Understanding that monthly dysmenorrhea can impact your daily life, let’s address this with an Ayurvedic perspective. This approach not only soothes the symptoms but also tackles the root causes, aiming for long-term relief without relying solely on NSAIDs, which can sometimes have side effects.

From an Ayurveda standpoint, menstrual cramps generally occur due to an imbalance in the Vata dosha. Vata governs movement in the body, including the natural flow during menstruation. An excess or imbalanced Vata might explain the pattern and severity of your discomfort.

First, focus on your diet. Try incorporating warm, cooked, and slightly oily foods, which are Vata-pacifying. Things like moong dal, rice, seasonal vegetables, and sesame oil are beneficial. Avoid cold or dry foods, as well as caffeine, and refined sugars, which can aggravate Vata. Herbal teas with ginger or chamomile can help soothe menstrual cramps.

Regularly practicing gentle yoga or stretches focused on the lower back and abdomen can be quite effective. Postures like Child’s Pose and Forward Bend might relieve tension and improve blood flow. Include these practices a few days prior and during your cycle, but listen to your body; don’t push if it feels uncomfortable.

Herbal supplements such as Ashwagandha and Shatavari can foster balance by nourishing and supporting your reproductive system, but it’s best to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized advice, considering these herbs affect people differently based on their constitution and other health factors.

One common remedy is to apply warmth to the abdominal area. A warm water bottle or heating pad can relax muscles and relieve pain. You can also try an Ayurvedic massage with warm sesame oil applied gently to your lower abdomen and back.

Reducing stress plays a crucial role. Small changes like maintaining a regular sleep schedule and practicing meditation or deep breathing exercises can stabilize Vata and thus decrease menstrual discomfort.

If these natural methods don’t bring substantial relief or if your condition worsens, it’s essential to continue consulting with your healthcare provider. Though Ayurveda offers many gentle remedies, its effectiveness can vary between individuals, and sometimes a combined approach with modern medicine might be necessary to ensure you’re comfortable and healthy.
