I am really confused about my digestion issues lately. For months, I’ve been feeling pretty bloated after meals, and it kinda drives me crazy. I started to eat more yogurt, hoping it would help, especially because my friend mentioned that does curd help in digestion? She swears by it, but I’m not totally sure if it’s working for me. Like, I'll have a big bowl of curd with my meal, thinking it’s gotta be good, right? But then sometimes I still feel heavy and uncomfortable. I read online that curd can aid digestion and has good bacteria or something, but it’s just not clear if it helps everyone. I even tried different kinds of curd, like the Greek kind and some plain stuff. Maybe I’m overdoing it??? Also, does timing matter? Should I eat curd with every meal or just certain ones? Any insights would be great, since these digestion issues are really making my life harder. Do you think curd should be a regular part of my diet if I struggle with this? Would love to hear from anyone who’s dealt with similar stuff!

However, whether it works for you can depend on various factors, especially your individual constitution or prakriti, which in Ayurveda, refers to your unique combination of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas. It can also depend on agni, or digestive fire, that plays a critical role in digestion.

Curd, or yogurt, is heavy by nature and can sometimes exacerbate feelings of bloating if consumed in large quantities or at inappropriate times. It has a sour property and if your digestion is already compromised, for instance, with low agni, having large amounts of curd can lead to kapha or mucus accumulation, which might worsen symptoms like heaviness or bloating. For individuals with predominant Kapha dosha, they might find curd exacerbating their condition due to its heavier nature.

Due to its sourness, Ayurveda recommends consuming curd in moderation, ideally during lunch when your digestive fire is strongest, and avoid it at night as it can lead to fermentation in the gut overnight. Instead, consider having whey (the liquid part of curd) or cultured buttermilk which is lighter and can be digested more easily. Try mixing it with spices like cumin, ginger, and a pinch of black salt to enhance its digestive benefits.

Another consideration is the combination with other foods. Eating curd with incompatible foods, like fish or heavy meats, might also contribute to indigestion or a bloated feeling.

You might need to explore if there’s an underlying dosha imbalance or any specific food intolerance. If bloating persists, it could be wise to observe a simple diet and avoid overly processed foods or fried items. If your symptoms continue to interfere with daily life, consult with a healthcare provider or an Ayurvedic practitioner for a more personalized assessment.
