is lassi good for constipation - #25604

I am really struggling with constipation lately, and it's becoming such a hassle! I’ve tried a bunch of things already, like increasing my fiber and drinking more water, but nothing's working as good as I'd hoped. A friend mentioned that lassi could help—it’s supposed to be good for digestion, right? But is lassi good for constipation? I've had it a couple of times at Indian restaurants, and it always felt refreshing, but I'm unsure if it’ll really make a difference for me. Also, I read that lassi has probiotics, which I know can be beneficial for gut health. Like, would that really help my situation or is it just another food myth? I mean, I’m just looking for something that can give me some relief without having to rely on laxatives all the time. Should I be drinking the sweet kind or the salty one for it to work best? Any advice would really be helpful! Just wanna feel normal again, you know?

Lassi, a traditional Indian drink made from yogurt, can indeed support digestion and may assist in providing relief from constipation. It’s not just tasty; it holds some beneficial properties worth noting for your concern.

The presence of probiotics in lassi helps in enhancing the gut flora, potentially easing bowel movements. When the gut microbiome is balanced, digestion is more efficient, and constipation is less likely to occur. However, results may vary depending on individual digestive process and constitution (prakriti).

For constipation, a salty lassi might be a preferable choice over the sweet one, as it typically contains black salt or cumin, both known for aiding digestion and relieving bloating or sluggish digestion. Sweet lassi, on the other hand, can be heavier on sugar, which isn’t necessarily optimal for someone dealing with constipation regularly.

To make it effective, you can make fresh lassi at home by blending 1 part yogurt with 2 parts water, adding a pinch of black salt, and some roasted cumin powder. This mix can be consumed mid-morning or with meals once a day. It’s important to ensure the yogurt used is fresh and preferably homemade to retain its probiotic properties.

Remember, lassi shouldn’t replace other dietary and lifestyle changes. Continue with your fiber-rich diet and proper hydration, and incorporating more cooked vegetables can complement the change. If constipation persists, it might be wise to consider any underlying Vata imbalance, as Vata dosha disturbance commonly leads to dryness and constipation.

Engaging in regular physical activity, especially yoga practices like Pawanmuktasana (wind relieving pose) or Vajrasana after meals, which are known to stimulate digestion and support bowel movements, can also help.

However, if you find little relief with dietary tweaks and the issue persists, consulting a healthcare professional or Ayurvedic practitioner would be a reasonable next step. They can provide a more comprehensive approach tailored to your specific dosha and health needs.
