I am really struggling with constipation, and it's been super frustrating. Like, I'm trying all these different things, and nothing really seems to work. Last week I went to this Ayurvedic clinic after hearing how natural remedies can be helpful, and the doctor there suggested incorporating ghee into my diet. I remember my grandmother always used to say, “ghee is good for digestion,” but I never thought much of it until now. I started adding some ghee to my meals and also tried taking a teaspoon of it first thing in the morning, thinking maybe that would help. But I can't help but wonder, does ghee help in constipation? I still don’t see a big difference, and I thought maybe I wasn’t using enough or maybe using it at the wrong time? Also, I’m kinda worried about how much of it is too much. Do I just keep trying this, or do you think there are other Ayurvedic remedies that work better? I'm really hoping to avoid any harsh medications because, you know, I heard they could have side effects, and I just want something natural that actually helps. Looking for any tips or personal stories!

Taking a teaspoon of ghee first thing in the morning, as you’ve been doing, is a good approach. But its efficacy can vary depending on individual constitution, or Prakriti, and the current state of health. You might consider adjusting the amount, starting with one teaspoon initially and gradually increasing to two if you don’t see improvement after a few days, assuming you don’t experience side effects. Ensure the ghee is warm and consumed on an empty stomach, possibly followed by a glass of warm water, as it helps to improve assimilation.

However, understanding your dosha can also guide you in managing constipation. If Vata is imbalanced, you may experience dryness and irregular bowels. A warm, oily diet, including ghee, is beneficial for balancing Vata. Incorporate cooked vegetables, whole grains, and soups to maintain regularity. A little triphala powder mixed with warm water can also help stimulate bowel movements and is safe for daily use, for its known to be gentle yet effective.

While ghee is beneficial, be mindful of not overconsuming it, especially if you have a tendency for Pitta imbalance or high cholesterol concerns. Normally, 1-2 teaspoons a day should suffice. Also, regular physical activity, staying hydrated, and establishing a routine can enhance ghee’s benefits.

It’s natural to be cautious and seek safer, more gentle alternatives to medication. If you’re not seeing improvement with just ghee, lifestyle changes could make a difference. Ayurveda promotes holistic balance, so consider your entire lifestyle, stress levels, and dietary patterns to gradually resolve constipation. If symptoms persist, consult with a skilled Ayurvedic practitioner for a personalised plan suited to your needs.
