Doctors' responses

Hi! I’m an assistant to the Ask Ayurveda doctors. I’ve carefully reviewed your question.

I will explain your symptoms through the Ayurvedic perspective so you understand what is happening in your body as a whole.

Your recurring abdominal pain and cramps during bowel movements suggest an imbalance in Vata dosha, which governs movement and flow in the body. Vata imbalance often leads to symptoms like irregular bowel movements, pain, and cramps. The urgency to visit the toilet after eating indicates a possible disturbance in Apana Vata, responsible for downward movement and elimination.

The sensation of cramps or ‘marod’ is associated with the dry and irregular nature of Vata. This can be exacerbated by eating habits or stress, which disturb the digestive fire (Agni), leading to weak digestion and accumulation of undigested food toxins (Ama). This can cause discomfort and irregular bowel patterns.

Ayurveda views these symptoms as a systemic imbalance rather than isolated issues. The digestive system is central to overall health, and imbalances here can affect the entire body. Stress, irregular routines, and unsuitable foods can further aggravate Vata, leading to the symptoms you experience.

To give doctors a precise and effective treatment plan, your answers to the questions below are essential. Without this information, the recommendations will be more general and less accurate.

Please answer each question as clearly as possible.

1. How long have you been experiencing these symptoms? Please select from: Less than 1 week, 1-4 weeks, 1-6 months, More than 6 months. 2. How would you rate the severity of your abdominal pain? Choose from: Mild, Moderate, Severe, Very severe. 3. When do you notice the pain is the worst? Is it during bowel movements, after eating, at night, or is there no specific pattern? 4. Have you noticed any specific foods that trigger your symptoms? Options include: Dairy products, Spicy foods, High-fiber foods, or No clear trigger. 5. How is your digestive health overall? Would you describe it as Good, Occasional bloating or gas, Frequent indigestion or acidity, or Chronic issues (constipation, diarrhea, IBS)? 6. How often do you experience bowel movements? Is it more than 3 times a day, 1-3 times a day, every few days, or less than once a week? 7. Have you tried any treatments or remedies for this condition before? Options are: No, this is the first time seeking help, Home remedies or lifestyle changes, Over-the-counter medication, or Prescribed medication or therapy.

Your detailed responses will help us guide you more accurately. Thank you for your cooperation.

Ek saal se Jayda ho geya iss problem ko Morning main jyada dard hota h washroom jane ke time

●IBS Balancing Blend Shatavari - 1 part Kamdudha - 1% part Shankha Bhasma - 1/2 part Arrowroot - 2 parts These four together: Soothes intestinal irritation, reduces acidity Strengthens the colon, stabilizes Vata ●How to consume this mixture: Take 1/2 teaspoon twice a day with a little lukewarm water, immediately after meals. This time is chosen because the digestive system and digestive tract can then absorb the medicine properly. ●Vata-Pacifying Tea Flaxseed Tea: Boil 1 teaspoon of flaxseed in 1 cup of water, strain, and drink before bed. It: Soothes the intestines Reduces Vata dryness Soothes pain and cramps ●Isabgol Subscribe Teaspoon Plain water - 1/2 cup This combination: Psyllium husk - 1 teaspoon 1 hour after dinner • Lubricates the intestinal lining • Helps shape stools • Reduces gas, distension, and irritation • Soothes colon sensitivity ●Kutajarishta for IBS: The antidiarrheal, immunostimulatory and anti-motility nature of Kutajarishta syrup is utilised in the IBS treatment. Kutajarishta is used in managing IBS also owing to its Grahi (absorbing) property and Kashaya (astringent) nature. ●Mustarist-It is commonly used for the treatment of loss of appetite, indigestion, severe diarrhea, dysentery, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Increases appetite by stimulation of the gastric juices and improving the functions of the liver. It has astringent and anti-diarrheal action attributed to Nagarmotha (Nutgrass). In gastroenteritis, it decreases the severity of vomiting and loose motions. Improves digestion and metabolism and increases the absorption of important nutrients. It is also useful in dyspepsia, anorexia, diarrhea, cholera, gastroenteritis, and even sprue.

Abdominal pain and cramping during bowel movements, especially when recurring, often points toward a disturbance in the digestive fire and the downward movement of energy in the body. In Ayurveda, this is frequently associated with Grahani (malabsorption syndrome) or Vata-dominant Arshas (hemorrhoids/fissures), where the colon lacks proper lubrication or is affected by accumulated toxins (Ama). The Ayurvedic Perspective From an Ayurvedic standpoint, these symptoms generally involve:

Vata Dushti: The primary culprit for “cramping” and “pain” is Vata Dosha. Specifically, Apana Vayu, which governs the downward flow of waste, becomes obstructed or “Avarana,” leading to erratic movements and discomfort. Mandagni (Weak Digestion): When the digestive fire is low, food isn’t processed correctly, creating Ama (undigested toxic residue). This sticky substance adheres to the intestinal walls, causing irritation during evacuation.

Dryness (Rookshata): If the internal lining of the colon is too dry, the passage of stool causes friction, leading to sharp pains or “shoola.” Suggested Management from Kerala Ayurveda To address these issues, the focus is on “Anulomana” (directing the Vata downward) and “Deepana-Pachana” (kindling the fire and digesting toxins). 1. Hinguwachadi Gulika This is a potent formulation for abdominal gas, cramps, and “shoola” (colicky pain). It helps in restoring the normal movement of Vata and clearing minor blockages in the GI tract. Dose: 1 to 2 tablets twice daily, taken about 30 minutes after food with lukewarm water. 2. Alsactil Tablet This is a specific Kerala Ayurveda proprietary medicine designed for hyperacidity and griping pain associated with bowel movements. It protects the gastric mucosa and helps soothe the intestinal lining. Dose: 1 to 2 tablets three times a day, or as needed when cramping occurs, usually before food. 3. Abhayarishtam This is a fermented liquid (Arishta) used to ensure smooth bowel movements. It is “Vata-anulomaka,” meaning it helps the downward air and stool move without causing pain or strain. Dose: 15 to 25 ml mixed with an equal amount of lukewarm water, taken twice daily after meals. 4. Gandharvahasthadi Castor Oil (For Acute Relief) If the pain is accompanied by significant constipation or hard stools, a mild purgative that also balances Vata is needed. Dose: 10 to 15 ml at bedtime with a cup of warm milk or warm water. This should be used only if there is no active diarrhea. Important Considerations Dietary Habit: Avoid “Vatala” foods such as raw salads, sprouts, cabbage, and cold drinks. Favor warm, oily, and easily digestible foods like moong dal khichdi with a teaspoon of Ghee. Hydration: Sip on “Shunti-Jala” (water boiled with a bit of dry ginger) throughout the day to support Agni.
