Is there a risk of rabies if a bat was in my room but I didn't get bitten? - #54676
Hello Doctor, I have a concern and would like your guidance. Around 4 days ago, a bat was in my room while I was awake and studying. I did not notice it initially, but later I saw it flying and immediately moved away. I did not feel any direct contact, bite, or scratch at any point. Since then, I have carefully checked my body multiple times and have not found any visible bite marks, punctures, or injuries. I do have some mosquito bites on my legs causing mild redness and slight irritation, but nothing that looks like a bite wound. Could you please advise: * Is there any risk of rabies in this situation? * Do I need to take a rabies vaccine as a precaution? Thank you.
Doctors' responses
You were awake, no contact, no bite/scratch seen → very low risk If 100% sure no contact → no vaccine needed If any doubt at all → take rabies vaccine (day 0, 3, 7, 14) Rabies is fatal if missed, so when unsure, vaccinate.
