How to treat nasal polyps naturally with turmeric and what dosage is safe? - #55920

Greetings. I have a long standing history of nasal polyps in my right ethmoids. I've had decades of antibiotics and prednisone..with multiple surgeries. I have a very poor sense of smell now. I am frustrated with "traditional" ENTs and doctors and would like a more natural cure. (FYI - I do and use everything for my dust allergies such a HEPA filters, bed & pillows covers, antihistamines, etc). I have no other known medical issues ...just my right ethmoid polyps which also cause me to snore over night My husband and I read about how well turmeric works for nasal polyps so we ordered this supplement from Amazon. <link removed> I took only one pill each evening. It worked right away by magically opening my sinus and completely stopped my snoring. But after a few days, I developed a subconjunctival hemorrhage (so I stopped). I am not any blood thinners and I don't take any medications. Unfortunately, a few days after I stopped taking the turmeric, my right sinus started feeling blocked again. Maybe the dosage was too strong. I'm not sure what the "standardized to contain 95% curmcunoids" means. Please advise what the best dosage for turmeric for nasal polyps is....oddly enough I can't locate that on the internet. Or maybe you have a better recommendation or perhaps a specific supplement for me to try. I greatly appreciate any advise or suggestion that you may have since I am brand new to this. I really need your guidance. I am very fortunate to have discovered your fabulous webste. I want to learn more about ayurveda. Thanks and best regards, Anne

Hello dear, It is understandable that you are seeking relief from the persistent frustration of nasal polyps, especially given your history of surgeries and recurring symptoms. Understanding Your Experience The “95% curcuminoids” label on your supplement means that the extract has been concentrated so that 95% of its total weight is composed of the three active compounds (curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin) found in the turmeric root. These highly concentrated extracts are much more potent than culinary turmeric and can significantly affect blood clotting and platelet aggregation, which may explain the subconjunctival hemorrhage you experienced. In Ayurveda, nasal polyps are often categorized under Nasa Gata Roga (diseases of the nose), frequently linked to an imbalance in the Kapha dosha. The goal in managing these conditions is typically to clear the excess mucus, reduce inflammation, and normalize the tissue growth through a combination of internal herbal preparations and specialized procedures. Ayurvedic management often focuses on both systemic (oral) and local (nasal) applications to address the underlying imbalance. According to studies involving traditional protocols, the following medicines are historically used in institutional settings for the management of nasal polyposis:
Prescription : 1. Oral Medication: Chitraka Haritaki Avaleha. This is a traditional semi-solid herbal jam formulation. It is typically administered to help balance Kapha and support respiratory health.

2. Nasal Administration: anu Taila Nasya. Nasya is an Ayurvedic procedure where medicated oils are administered through the nostrils to directly target the nasal passage. Shikhari Taila is one traditional formulation used in this context.
Dosage and Professional Guidance: Standardized dosing for these complex formulations depends on your individual prakriti (constitution) and the severity of the vikriti (imbalance). Because these are potent preparations often involving ingredients like Chitrak (a heating herb) and various minerals, you must not self-prescribe them. Important Safety Considerations Stop Self-Supplementing: Given your adverse reaction (the hemorrhage), discontinue the high-potency turmeric/curcumin supplement immediately. Avoid Blood-Thinning Herbs: Many supplements, including high-dose curcumin, have blood-thinning properties. If you are prone to bleeding or bruising, you must be extremely cautious with concentrated herbal extracts.

▪︎In Ayurveda, nasal polyps are closely related to Nasa Arshas, often triggered by chronic inflammation, persistent allergies, and an underlying imbalance of Kapha and Vata doshas. Because polyps are non-cancerous, teardrop-shaped growths on the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses, management focuses on reducing tissue swelling, clearing the airway, and drying up excess mucus accumulation. ▪︎Turmeric (Haridra) serves as a cornerstone for natural management due to its potent anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and Kapha-reducing properties. The active compound, curcumin, works at a cellular level to block inflammatory pathways that cause the nasal mucosa to swell. For internal consumption, a safe daily dosage of pure turmeric powder is typically 1 to 3 grams(about half to one teaspoon), divided into two doses. Mixing it with warm water, milk, or a pinch of black pepper significantly enhances its absorption and systemic efficacy. Beyond oral intake, local therapies are highly effective for direct relief. Inhaling steam infused with a teaspoon of turmeric or practicing ▪︎Dhumapana(traditional herbal smoke inhalation using a burning turmeric stick) helps deliver its anti-inflammatory properties directly to the affected nasal lining. Additionally, classical formulations like Haridra Khanda—a traditional granules preparation containing turmeric and other synergistic herbs—can be taken at a standard dosage of 3 to 6 grams twice daily with warm water or milk to address underlying allergic tendencies. ▪︎A comprehensive Ayurvedic management plan usually pairs turmeric with targeted cleansing rituals. Nasya therapy, involving the administration of specific medicated oils like Anu Taila or Shadbindu Taila (2 to 4 drops in each nostril), helps liquefy stuck mucus and shrink polyp tissue. Regular saline nasal irrigation (Jala Neti) is also recommended to wash away allergens and irritants, though it is crucial to ensure the water is sterile to prevent secondary infections. ▪︎While turmeric and natural therapies are excellent for managing mild to moderate symptoms and preventing recurrence, large polyps that severely obstruct breathing or cause chronic sinus infections require careful monitoring. If you experience severe nasal blockage, persistent headaches, facial pain, or a complete loss of smell, it is important to seek a comprehensive clinical evaluation. A healthcare professional can help monitor the size of the growths and ensure your natural regimen is safely integrated with any necessary medical treatments. ▪︎Tulsi Capsules – 2 Capsules, twice daily with plain water after meals.Tulsi has great importance in India from a religious aspect. The Latin name of tulsi is Ocimum sanctum and also known as holy basil. Standardized extract of tulsi is used to prepare the tulsi capsules. Regular use of tulsi capsules helps the body to fight against various infections. It is a herb supplement that works wonderfully for cough, cold and various allergies. It is very effective in respiratory tract infections and all underlying conditions responsible for causing various infections ▪︎Aller-G Care – 2 Capsules, twice daily with plain water after meals.Herbs used in the formulation of Aller G care capsules are anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory in nature. These herbs help to provide the relief in the symptoms associated with sinusitis like fever, cough, congestion, facial swelling, redness or swelling around eyes and heavy pressure on face.

Nasal polyps in Ayurveda are often related to Kapha imbalance with chronic inflammation of nasal passages. Turmeric can help because curcuminoids reduce inflammation, but high-dose extracts may thin blood slightly in some sensitive people and can contribute to easy bleeding such as subconjunctival hemorrhage. “95% curcuminoids” means the capsule contains a highly concentrated turmeric extract, much stronger than kitchen turmeric powder. For some people, that dose is too strong. You should avoid restarting the same high-strength capsule daily since you already developed bleeding symptoms. Take Turmeric Use plain organic turmeric powder instead of high-potency extract Dose: 1/2 teaspoon with warm water or warm milk after food at night Add a small pinch of black pepper Avoid excess dose Haridra Khanda 1 teaspoon twice daily after meals with warm water Helpful for allergy-related polyps and sinus congestion Sitopaladi Churna 1/2 teaspoon twice daily with honey after meals Nasya therapy Anu Taila: 2 drops in each nostril morning Use after gentle steam inhalation Very useful for dryness, blockage, snoring, and smell function Steam inhalation Plain steam or with tulsi leaves once daily Diet Avoid cold yogurt, ice drinks, cheese, excess sugar, and fried foods Reduce dust exposure and late-night meals

For the nasal polyps – ayurveda can help u for this…don’t go for multiple antibiotics.i know it’s very frustrating to take medicines again and again. – if severe blockage and problem is very severe then u must have to go for kshar karma for nasal polyp for early result or relief – rest I am also prescribing u some medicines and nasya daily for better results ------Internal Medicines 1) Haridra Khanda – 1 tsp twice daily after meals with lukewarm water. 2) Sitopaladi Churna – 2 gm + Godanti Bhasma 250 mg twice daily with honey. 3) Trikatu Churna – 1 gm twice daily before meals with warm water. 4) Kanchanar Guggulu – 2 tabs twice daily after meals. 5) Curcumin (low dose only) – 250 mg once daily after lunch. Avoid high-potency 95% extract due to bleeding tendency. ----Nasal / Local Treatment Jal Neti with lukewarm saline water once daily morning. -After Neti: Anu Taila Nasya – 2 drops each nostril morning & evening. Steam inhalation with plain water once daily. —Diet & Lifestyle Avoid cold water, curd at night, ice cream, refrigerated foods, excess sugar, cheese, and dust exposure. Prefer warm light meals, turmeric, ginger, black pepper in moderation. Sleep with head slightly elevated. Practice gentle Pranayama daily. ----Advice Stop turmeric immediately if eye bleeding, bruising, or bleeding gums recur.

Dear Anne, Nasal polyps in Ayurveda are often related to aggravated Kapha dosha with chronic allergy and sinus inflammation. Your response to turmeric suggests that inflammation is a major factor in your case. The supplement you used was quite concentrated — “95% curcuminoids” means it is a high-strength turmeric extract, much stronger than regular kitchen turmeric. In sensitive people, higher doses may slightly thin the blood and can rarely contribute to issues like a subconjunctival hemorrhage. Safe Ayurvedic Guidance for Turmeric For long-term use, start gently: Turmeric extract (95% curcuminoids): 250–500 mg once daily after food is usually safer initially. Avoid taking it on an empty stomach. Do not combine with other natural blood thinners (high ginger, garlic, fish oil, etc.). If bleeding tendency appears again, stop immediately. A milder and often safer Ayurvedic option is: ½ teaspoon organic turmeric powder in warm water or milk at night with a pinch of black pepper. This works slower but is gentler for long-term inflammation control. Better Ayurvedic Support for Nasal Polyps For chronic ethmoid polyps, Ayurveda usually gives better results with a combination approach: Steam inhalation with turmeric or ajwain Saline nasal rinse (Neti) daily Nasya therapy (medicated nasal oil) — especially Anu Taila Reduce Kapha-increasing foods: cold dairy excess sugar ice drinks processed foods Helpful Herbs Commonly Used Curcumin (low dose) Haridra Khanda Sitopaladi Tulsi Guduchi Important Note Because you have: loss of smell, facial pressure, recurrent unilateral ethmoid polyps, multiple surgeries, it is wise to continue periodic ENT evaluation as chronic unilateral polyps occasionally need monitoring. With proper Ayurvedic sinus cleansing, allergy control, and gentle anti-inflammatory therapy, many patients experience: reduced blockage, better breathing, less snoring, fewer flare-ups over time. Wishing you steady healing and clearer breathing ahead.

Many thanks for your insights, Dr. Vidhate. Much appreciated. Upon further research, the Turmeric 500mg with 95% standardized curcuminois was very strong. As you noted, I did respond well to the turmeric (my sinuses have never been so open and clear!). I would like to try it again with a safer dosage. I have located a 100mg capsule standardized to 35% which seems to be a little stronger than culinary turmeric. My eye is healing and the redness is nearly gone. Once it has completely healed, I will try the lower dose of turmeric. It will take longer to eliminate or reduce my nasal polyps but that is fine. I have been using daily steam inhalation and a nasal rinse for years with some benefits. I am hopeful that the new lower dose turmeric will provide additional sinus relief. Thanks again!

take care…Have a great healthy life

Greetings Anne First of all thank you for sharing sich a detailed history I can understand your frustration You are going through so much that too for more than 10 years now Many people with chronic nasal polyp eventually get sustainable relief with proper ayurvedic treatment It will help to prevent recurrence and also reduce inflammation ove the time so dont worry we are here to guide you better 😊 🔹Your observation regarding turmeric is also gery clinically meaningful With turmeric your sinus opened and snoring also improved all this suggests that turmeric likely helped you in reducing your inflammation and congestion But… Your subconjuctival hemorrhage is some thing we cant ignore 🔹About turmeric dosage you used You had used 500 mg which ia standardized to 95% Curcuminoids -It is much stronger form -it can cause mild blood thinning effect -This may increase your bleeding tendencies All this does not necessarily suggest that turmeric is bad for you it simply mean that -Your dose was little on higher side -Your body may be little more sensitive to heat -Daily use of such composition is not suitable for you 🔹Safe approach You can use 1/4 tsp of organic turmeric powder Mix it in warm water Take it once daily after food Also add 1 pinch of black pepper for bettee absorption 🔹Alone turmeric is not sufficient Our treatment should focus on -Reducing your inflammation -Improving drainage of sinus -Reducing allergic reactions -Preparing recurring of symptoms 🔹Ayurvedic plan of treatment Nasya therapy Anu taila- Instill 2 drops of anu taila in both nostrils in morning This will help in sinus drainages and chronic irritation Steam inhalation Continue your steam inhalation you can also add 1 pinch of turmeric powder and 4-5 tulsi leaves Internal Medications 1.Sitopaladi churna 1 tsp with honey 2-3 times a day 2.Pipplayasavam 20 ml twice daily after food 3 Yastimadhu ghanvati 1 tablet twice daily after food 🔹Important note As you have developed subconjuctival hemorrhage better not to restart the same turmeric in high concentration Wishing you a good health😊 Warm Regards Dr Snehal Vidhate

Hello, In Ayurveda, nasal polyps are correlated with Nasa arsha or Apeenasa- a condition primarily involving kapha vata imbalance with secondary pitta aggravation (inflammation). Your decades-long history, poor smell and snoring align with deep seated kapha accumulation in the sinus channels Important Note on Turmeric and your hemorrhage The subconjunctival hemorrhage you experienced is a known side effect of high-dose curcumin due to its significant antiplatelat/blood-thinning activity. Standardized to 95% curcuminoids means the extract is highly concentrated- far more potent than dietary turmeric. 500 mg of 95% standardized curcumin ~ consuming several tablespoons of raw turmeric daily. This explains the bleed Do not resume that high- potent standardized extract Internal medication 1) Haridrakhanda= 5gm with warm milk twice daily after meals =best classical anti polyp, anti-allergic formula containing turmeric in SAFE traditional dose 2) Sitopaladi churna= 1/2 tsp with honey twice daily before meals =clears kapha, opens sinus channels 3) Trikatu churna= 1/4 tsp twice daily before meals with honey =deepana-pachana, burna kapha accumulation 4) Kanchanar guggulu= 2 tabs twice daily after meals with warm water =best classical tablet for growths- shrinks abnormal tissues Local therapies 1) Nasya= Most important -use Anu taila -lie on your back, tilt head slightly back -warm the oil slightly, instill 2 drops per nostril each morning -sniff gently, remain lying for 2 minutes -do this daily for a minimum of 4-6 weeks 2) Steam inhalation -add 5 drops eucalyptus oil + 2 drops pepermint oil + a pinch of ajwain -inhale for 10 minutes , twice daily 3) Jal neti -use a neti pot with lukewarm saline water (1/4 tsp non iodized salt per cup) -do this once daily, preferably morning -helps mechanicaly clear kapha and allergens Diet -warm light freshly cooked meals -ginger tea daily (fresh ginger + black pepper + honey) -turmeric in cooking -garlic -warm water throughout the day- no cold water at all -pomegranate., amla Strictly Avoid -cold drinks, ice cream, refrigerated food -dairy excess esepcially curd, yogurt, cheese, ice cream- major kapha aggravators -bananas, white sugar, maida -exposure to cold air, Ac directly blowing on face Lifestyle additions -Pranayam daily 20 mins= Anulom vilom , Bhastrika= clinicaly shown to improve sinus drainage and reduce polyp recurrence -Avoid allergens religiously- you’re already doing well here -Sleep with head slightly elevated- helps drainage -Avoid strong perfumes, incense, pollution- these aggravate the inflamed mucosa Expected timeline 1-2 weeks= improved nasal breathing, reduced congestion 3-4 weeks= snoring reduction begins, reduced facial pressure 6-8 weeks= measurable reduction in polyp related symptoms 3-6 months= structural improvement, reduced recurrence tendency Do follow Hope this might be helpful Thank you

Here is a breakdown of what that label meant, why it caused an issue, and how we can safely manage your sinus polyps moving forward. ••De-coding the Label: “95% Curcuminoids” When a supplement label says “Standardized to 95% Curcuminoids,” it means it is a highly concentrated, chemical extract of turmeric. ••The Analogy: Raw turmeric root only contains about 3% to 5% curcuminoids. A 95% extract is essentially an isolated, hyper-potent drug rather than a whole food. ••The Ayurvedic View: In Ayurveda, we rarely use isolated extracts. We believe the whole plant contains “intelligence”—other compounds in raw turmeric buffer its intensity and protect the body. By taking a 95% extract pill, the dose was incredibly high and heavily increased Pitta (the fiery principle in the body), which led to the blood vessel rupture. ••Because you experienced bleeding, you should avoid high-dose, isolated 95% curcuminoid pills entirely. Why There is No “Standard Dosage” for Nasal Polyps You couldn’t find a specific “turmeric dosage for nasal polyps” online because Ayurveda doesn’t treat the disease; it treats the person. ••Nasal polyps (Nasa Arsha) are a combination of: •Kapha Dosha: The water/earth element forming the physical, stagnant mass of the polyp. •Vata Dosha: The air element drying out the sinus passages and causing blockages. •Raktha/Pitta: The blood and heat principles, which became aggravated when you took the high-dose extract. ••Safe, Ayurvedic Recommendations for Your Sinuses Since the extract was too sharp for your system, we need to switch from systemic (oral pills that thin the blood) to local treatments that target the sinuses directly without altering your blood chemistry. 1. Nasya (Nasal Oil Drops) Instead of an oral supplement, the absolute gold standard for nasal polyps in Ayurveda is Nasya. This delivers herbs directly to the affected tissue. ••Anu Tailam: This is a traditional, medicated Ayurvedic nasal oil. It contains a balanced blend of many herbs (including turmeric) in a sesame oil base. It works to naturally shrink polyps, pacify Vata, and clear Kapha without entering your systemic blood circulation in a way that causes bleeding. How to use: Warm the bottle gently in hot water. Lie down, tilt your head back, and place 2 drops into each nostril in the morning. Inhale deeply, then spit out any residue that reaches your throat. 2. Dhumapana (Herbal Inhalation) Instead of swallowing a pill, inhale the therapeutic benefits of turmeric. Turmeric Steam: Add half a teaspoon of organic, whole turmeric powder (kitchen quality, not an extract) and 2 drops of eucalyptus oil to a bowl of boiling water. Inhale the steam for 5–10 minutes with a towel over your head. This provides the anti-inflammatory benefits directly to the nasal mucosa instantly. 3. The Whole-Food Approach If you want to ingest turmeric for its anti-snoring and anti-inflammatory properties, stick to the traditional whole food, which your body can process safely: ••Golden Milk (Haldi Doodh): Simmer 1/4 teaspoon of organic whole turmeric powder in a cup of milk (or plant-based milk) with a pinch of black pepper and a little cardamon. The fats in the milk help absorb the turmeric safely, and the dose is low enough not to trigger bleeding.

95% curcuminoids means the turmeric extract is highly concentrated. Many capsules contain the equivalent of many teaspoons of raw turmeric. These extracts can reduce platelet aggregation and occasionally trigger easy bruising or bleeding in sensitive people. Because you reacted with an eye hemorrhage, I would avoid high-dose concentrated curcumin extracts for now. A Safer Ayurvedic Approach for this is Haridra (Turmeric) Avoid 95% standardized curcumin extracts initially. Organic turmeric powder 1/4 teaspoon after dinner for 5 days Then increase slowly to 1/2 teaspoon twice daily if tolerated with warm water Nasya Therapy -Anu tail -2 drops each nostril twice daily Daily Steam Inhalation Simple but very effective. Add to hot water: plain water OR pinch turmeric + ajwain Steam 5–7 minutes nightly. Avoid excessive heat. Ayurvedic Internal Herbs Sitopaladi Churna Helpful for allergic sinus tendency. Dose: 1/2 tsp with honey twice daily after meals Yashtimadhu (Licorice Avoid if: high blood pressure fluid retention 5. Anti-Polyp Diet Very important in chronic Kapha sinus disease. Reduce: cold foods/drinks yogurt at night cheese ice cream excessive sugar processed foods beer/alcohol Prefer: warm cooked foods ginger garlic black pepper tulsi tea soups You will get the results Thankyou

Your experience is important here: the turmeric seemed to improve airflow quickly, but a subconjunctival hemorrhage (broken eye blood vessel) shortly afterward makes me cautious about simply increasing or continuing the same dose. A direct answer: There is no established evidence-based standard turmeric dose specifically for nasal polyps. “95% curcuminoids” means it is a highly concentrated extract, stronger than ordinary culinary turmeric powder. A 500 mg capsule standardized to 95% curcuminoids can be a substantial dose, especially if combined with absorption enhancers (such as black pepper/piperine). Because you noticed a bleeding-type event after starting it, I would not recommend restarting the same high-concentration product without discussing it with your physician, even if you are not on blood thinners. Natural approaches that may be more supportive for long-standing polyps: Daily saline nasal irrigation (can help mucus clearance and allergens) Steam inhalation if it gives relief Continue dust/pollen control measures Anti-inflammatory diet: more fruits, vegetables, omega-3 sources; reduce highly processed foods Ayurveda-based supportive options sometimes used: Gentle nasya (nasal therapy) under supervision rather than self-administered strong oils Haridra (turmeric) in food-level amounts rather than high-dose extracts if tolerated One additional point: with decades of recurrent ethmoid polyps + reduced smell + multiple surgeries, ENT specialists often also consider conditions such as chronic eosinophilic inflammation or allergy-driven disease patterns. Loss of smell can become harder to reverse when inflammation has been present for years. Regards, Dr Raghuveer (Ayurvedacharya)

The label standardized to contain 95% curcuminoids means you were not taking traditional whole turmeric. You were taking a highly concentrated, lab-isolated chemical extract. In Ayurveda, pure turmeric is naturally heating and gently thins the blood to improve circulation. However, when you artificially isolate the curcumin to 95%, it becomes an extremely potent anticoagulant and generates immense internal heat. This aggressive heat and sudden blood-thinning effect caused the fragile capillaries in your eye to burst, resulting in the subconjunctival hemorrhage. This is exactly why Ayurveda strongly advises against isolated chemical extracts. We use whole herbs, which naturally contain other compounds that buffer the heat and safely deliver the medicinal benefits. ✓Ayurvedic Plan Nasal polyps are known as Nasa Arsha in Ayurveda, caused by an accumulation of deep-seated Kapha (mucus) and Vata that blocks the airway. We need to shrink the fleshy growths, manage the underlying dust and pollen allergies, and safely keep the passage open. 1. Haridra Khanda (Safe Turmeric Alternative) Dosage: 1/2 teaspoon. Time: At night, 30 minutes before sleep. Vehicle: Mixed into a small cup of warm milk (or warm water). 2. Kanchanar Guggulu Dosage: 2 tablets twice a day. Time: 30 minutes after your lunch and dinner with warm water. 3. Shadbindu Taila (Nasya Therapy) Procedure: Lie down and tilt your head back. Put exactly 2 drops of this warm medicated oil into each nostril every morning on an empty stomach. Sniff gently. ✓Crucial Care Rules Facial Swedana (Steam Inhalation): Since you are already practicing steam inhalation, upgrade it to a proper Swedana. Add 1 drop of pure Eucalyptus essential oil or a pinch of Ajwain (carom seeds) to the boiling water. This cuts through the thick, stubborn Kapha blocking the right ethmoid much faster than plain water. Strict Dietary Rules: To starve the polyps, you must temporarily stop feeding your body mucus-forming foods. Strictly avoid cold foods, chilled water, heavy dairy (like cheese and yogurt), and bananas. Regards, Dr. Gursimranjeet Singh MD Panchakarma
