Rheumatoid arthritis, causing swollen knees, can be quite distressing. Ayurvedically, this condition is often linked to an imbalance in Vata dosha, which manifests as pain, swelling, and stiffness. Focus on reducing inflammation by adopting some key strategies.

Diet plays a crucial role. Incorporate anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric and ginger into meals. Golden milk, combining warm milk with turmeric and a pinch of black pepper, can be soothing in the evenings. Avoid processed foods, excessive caffeine, and anything cold, as these can aggravate Vata and inflammation. Warm, nourishing foods, cooked with spices like cumin, coriander, and fennel, are beneficial. Hydrate yourself adequately but avoid cold drinks — room temperature or warm is best.

Lifestyle shifts that pacify Vata, include gentle, daily exercises such as yoga. Poses like the “Baddha Konasana” and “Vrikshasana” help enhance flexibility without putting too much stress on the joints. Pranayama, focusing on calming and grounding techniques like “Nadi Shodhana” (alternate nostril breathing), can also be advantageous.

Therapeutically, consider applying warm sesame oil to the affected areas before bathing. This helps reduce stiffness while nourishing the joint tissues, known as dhatus. Hot baths with Epsom salts may also lessen inflammation and pain.

It’s crucial to address your digestive fire, or agni, as imbalance here can exacerbate symptoms. Begin meals with fresh ginger slices sprinkled with lemon juice and salt to kindle agni. Maintaining a regular routine with early waking and sleeping times, can keep Vata in check.

However, given the severity of your symptoms, pursue a timely consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner. They may recommend internal herbal formulations like Guggul or shallaki, tailored to your specific prakriti and condition. If symptoms worsen or mobility is severely impaired, seeking immediate medical care is essential. Always coordinate with a healthcare professional to ensure a safe management plan that integrates all aspects of your health.
