It sounds like you’re experiencing quite a bit of discomfort, given the symptoms you’re describing. From an Ayurvedic perspective, it’s important to consider the possible imbalance of your doshas, particularly the Vata dosha, which often governs pain and movement in the body.

The pain and swelling at the base of your skull coupled with shoulder discomfort could be related to an imbalance in the Vata and possibly Kapha doshas. The burning sensation might indicate some Pitta involvement as well. This could lead to blockages in the srotas (channels) affecting blood flow and causing inflammation and muscle stiffness.

Firstly, addressing the Vata imbalance is crucial. Consider applying warm sesame oil or Mahanarayan oil, a classical Ayurvedic formulation, to the affected area on your shoulder and base of skull, twice daily gently massaging in circular motions. The warmth and oil will help to pacify Vata, reduce stiffness and improve circulation. Follow this with a warm compress or hot water bag for 20 minutes to enhance effectiveness.

In terms of diet, try incorporating warm, cooked foods with a balance of sweet, salty, and sour tastes wise to calm Vata and Pitta. Avoid foods that are cold, dry or excessively spicy. Opt for rice, cooked vegetables, and soups, and stay well hydrated with warm herbal teas like ginger or chamomile.

Rest and gentle stretching of the neck and shoulder region can aid in releasing tension, but it’s essential to avoid abrupt movements. Practices such as gentle yoga, focusing on poses that support the neck and shoulders would be beneficial. However, avoid strain or pain by listening to body’s signals.

Given your described symptoms, I must emphasize importance of seeking medical attention to rule out more serious conditions, particularly if there’s significant pain, swelling or any neurological symptoms such as numbness or weakness. It’s important not to delay in evaluating this further with a healthcare provider.

Meanwhile, following these recommendations can support your body’s natural healing processes, but they should not replace urgent medical assessment if needed.
