how to sleep better at night naturally - #23209

Allison

I am really struggling with sleep lately, like, I can't seem to settle down at night. It's been super frustrating 'cause my mind races and I've tried counting sheep, tea, even avoiding screens, but nothing seems to help. I keep wondering how to sleep better at night naturally. My friend suggested some Ayurvedic herbs, but I'm not sure where to start! Are there specific routines or calming practices that help with how to sleep better at night naturally? I've heard about some meditations too, but I'm kinda lost on which ones are effective. Any tips would be awesome!

Achieving better sleep naturally through Ayurveda is often about addressing the root cause of the imbalance and soothing the mind. Establishing a calming pre-sleep routine is key. From an Ayurvedic perspective, a Vata imbalance frequently leads to restlessness and racing thoughts. Let’s guide you through a few steps that might help.

Start your evening with an Abhyanga, which is a self-massage using warm sesame oil. This can ground the Vata energy, soothing both your body and mind. After the massage, a warm shower will help absorb the oil and relax your muscles.

Incorporate Ayurvedic herbs known for their calming properties. Ashwagandha and Brahmi can be highly effective. You can find these in capsule form or as powders. Ashwagandha taken in the evening, maybe with warm milk or almond milk, supports healthy sleep cycles. Brahmi, on the other hand, pacifies the mind, easing stress. Be mindful of dietary considerations or allergies here.

To further calm the mind, practice deep breathing or meditation between 15 to 20 minutes before bed. Yoga Nidra is an excellent choice; it guides you into a state of conscious relaxation. Many find this practice ideal for quieting a racing mind.

Avoid stimulating activities an hour before bed. This includes strenuous exercise, intense discussions, or too much screen time. Instead, try reading a lightly engaging book under soft lighting.

Finally, adjust your sleeping environment. Make sure your room is dark, comfortable and cool. Consider using a diffuser with calming essential oils like lavender or chamomile—just a few drops.

Consistency is critical, stick to a regular sleep schedule even on weekends. These practices, in alignment with Ayurvedic principles, can gradually set you on a path to more restful nights. If troubles persist, consulting a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner might provide more personalized insight.
