what happens if we eat fish and curd together - #24380

Scarlett

I am really confused about something that’s been bugging me. So, I always loved eating fish, right? Like, especially grilled salmon or sushi. And then there’s this thing about having curd, which I can’t get enough of, like putting it in my smoothies or just enjoying it plain. But recently, I heard this old saying about not mixing fish and curd together, saying something like "what happens if we eat fish and curd together" is bad for your health?? I thought it was just an old wives' tale or whatever, but then I started getting nervous. After a meal with grilled fish and a side of raita (which is like buttermilk), I felt kinda off, like my stomach wasn’t happy. I even looked up my symptoms and got a bit freaked out. I just wanna know, is there any scientific reasoning behind all this? Like, what happens if we eat fish and curd together? Am I imagining things, or should I actually stay away from that combo? Would really appreciate some guidance here because I don’t wanna miss out on my favorite foods!

In Ayurveda, there’s a consideration that certain foods should be consumed separately due to their inherent qualities, called “viruddha ahara” or incompatible foods. Fish and curd are often mentioned in this context. The primary reason behind this is the differing energetics and digestive properties they possess. Fish is generally known to be heating (ushna) in nature, which means it can increase your inner heat, while curd, specifically, is cooling (sheetal). Combining such opposites can potentially disturb the digestive fire (agni), leading to indigestion or other gastrointestinal discomforts, which might be why you felt off after that meal.

But let’s look at a bit of grounding in practical terms too. Scientifically, there’s not much direct evidence pointing to severe adverse effects from mixing fish with curd, but your reaction is worth noting. It’s possible that the combination could slow down digestion or cause mild discomfort in some, and different individuals may react differently based on their Prakriti (constitution) and current digestive state.

For immediate solutions, if you face similar discomfort again, you might try warm water with a pinch of ginger and a small amount of honey to balance out your agni. Use lemon juice sparingly after meals if needed, as it can promote digestion without being too aggressive.

For a more balanced diet moving forward, consider spacing the consumption of fish and curd by a few hours if possible. Avoid eating them together frequently as a precaution. This way, you can enjoy both without worrying about upsetting your stomach. Make sure your diet aligns with your dosha constitution to maintain harmony in your digestive system.

If you notice persistent digestive issues, it’s good to consult with a healthcare provider or an Ayurvedic practitioner to reassess your dietary habits and make necessary adjustments tailored just for you. Sometimes, a small tweak here or there in food combinations can lead to better digestion and overall well-being!
