can i eat curd in fever - #24495

Jackson

I am really confused about what to eat when I'm not feeling good. Last week, I came down with a fever that just wouldn't let up, you know? The whole thing started with chills and then I had this terrible sore throat. I’ve been resting a lot, but my mom keeps asking me if I want some curd. I remember her saying it’s good for digestion and can be cooling, but do you think that means I can eat curd in fever? Like, is it really okay? I read somewhere that dairy might not be great when you’re sick because it can produce mucus or something. But then my friend said she always had curd when she had a fever and she felt better?? It’s so hard to know what to believe. I haven't had much of an appetite anyway, but I thought a little curd might help me feel less nauseous. What do you guys think? Can I eat curd in fever without making things worse? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Eating curd during a fever can be a bit of a tricky decision, but from an Ayurvedic perspective, the impact of curd largely depends on your unique body constitution or prakriti, as well as the type of fever you are experiencing. Curd is known for its cooling properties and aiding digestion, but it is also heavy and can contribute to kapha imbalances if consumed in certain conditions.

Fevers are often associated with an imbalance in the body’s agni, or digestive fire. In Ayurveda, it is important to keep this fire balanced to promote healing and recovery. If your fever is aligned with symptoms of increased kapha, like congestion, excessive mucus production, or lethargy, then curd might not be the best choice. The qualities of curd are similar to kapha, and therefore, could potentially aggravate these symptoms.

However, if your fever is more pitta-related, characterized by burning sensations or inflammation without much mucus involved, a small amount of fresh or homemade curd might be soothing and beneficial. It’s essential though, to consume curd in moderation and ideally, during the day when the digestive fire is naturally stronger, avoiding it at night.

If you decide to have curd, consider mixing it with a pinch of black pepper or ginger, which can help balance its effects and aid digestion. You might also prefer buttermilk, which is lighter than curd and goes well with some freshly crushed cumin seeds. Also make shure the curd is fresh, as sour or old curd might worsen your condition.

Pay attention to how your body responds. If you notice any increase in symptoms aftr consuming curd, it’s best to discontinue and opt for lighter options like warm herbal teas or broth-based soups. Always prioritize hydration and rest, and if your symptoms persist, consult with a healthcare professional promptly.
