what is kanji drink - #24798

Noah

I am really curious about this kanji drink I've heard about! A friend of mine was telling me how it helped her digestion, and now I can't stop thinking about it. I've had these awful bloating issues lately, honestly, it feels like I can't eat anything without feeling like a balloon afterwards. I did some research but I'm still not clear on what is kanji drink? Is it just like fermented rice water or is it more complex? I saw something about it being good for gut health, which makes perfect sense since I've tried so many remedies and they haven’t worked. I even tried probiotics and all that stuff, but nothing seems to stick you know! Anyone here actually drink kanji regularly? How does it taste and do you feel any difference? I really hope this could be a solution for my digestion problems! Thanks!!!

Kanji is essentially a fermented beverage that has been a staple in traditional Ayurvedic practices for ages. It’s made by fermenting a base ingredient — typically, black carrots, and sometimes red carrots, along with mustard seeds, salt, and water. Fermentation takes place over several days, allowing natural bacteria to proliferate and beneficial probiotics to form. It’s this process that makes kanji especially good for digestion, by helping to balance your gut microbiome, which could explain its effects on your bloating issues.

The fermentation adds a pungent, tangy flavor which some people may find refreshing while others might need some time to acquire. If you’ve already tried probiotics without success, kanji could be a different type of probiotic intake for you. Ayurvedically speaking, Kanji helps in enhancing Agni (digestive fire) and reducing Ama (toxins), which could be the root cause of your digestive problems, considering your symptoms.

To try kanji at home, you could start by taking black or red carrots, peeling them, and slicing them into small pieces. Add these to a clean glass jar with a teaspoon of mustard seeds, some salt, and water until the carrots are fully submerged. Stir this daily and let it ideally ferment for about 5-7 days in a warm, dark place. When it’s ready, you can strain the drink, refrigerate it, and begin consuming small amounts daily, like half a glass.

It’s wise to listen to your body’s responses when you start with kanji. If you feel the fermentation process suits your body, you may slowly increase the intake. Remember, Ayurveda emphasizes balance, so too much of even a good thing can be counterproductive.

It’s worth keeping in mind the if symptoms prevail or exacerbate, professional medical advice should be sought. While kanji is a wonderful aid for many, symptoms such as persistent bloating may require further investigation to rule out other underlying issues.
