can we use honey on face daily - #24941

Scarlett

I am really curious if can we use honey on face daily? I started using honey a few weeks ago because I've heard amazing things about its benefits for skin. My skin was feeling kinda dull and maybe a bit dry, so I thought, why not? The first couple of days, it was great — super hydrating and I noticed my skin was really glowing! But now I’m not so sure. Some days it feels sticky or even kinda greasy, and I heard overusing it could cause breakouts. Yikes! I also have slight redness on my cheeks sometimes, and not sure if that’s from honey or something else I tried mixing it with. Honestly, I'm a bit confused on the right way to use it. Like, should I be applying it every day? Or just a few times a week? Can we use honey on face daily without any side effects? Any advice would be super helpful!

Honey can indeed be quite beneficial for your skin due its natural moisturizing and antibacterial properties. From the perspective of Ayurveda, honey is well-regarded for balancing Vata and Kapha, which can help in nourishing dry skin and reducing dullness. However, your concerns about daily use are valid, especially given the effects you’ve experienced.

Daily application of honey on the face might not be ideal for everyone, as skin types and underlying doshas may react differently. For instance, if your skin tends toward Pitta imbalance, regular use might be too heating, leading to redness or even irritation. Vata or Kapha-prone individuals may benefit more regularly. Therefore, using honey two to three times a week can be a more balanced approach, allowing your skin to enjoy the benefits without potential drawbacks.

To apply honey, simply cleanse your face first. Use a thin layer of raw, organic honey, avoiding processed or over-refined products that may irritate. Let it sit for about 15-20 minutes, then wash it off with lukewarm water. If mixing with other ingredients, try a patch test first on a small skin area.

Be mindful of honey’s humectant properties—it draws moisture from the environment into your skin. In very humid conditions, it may feel sticky or greasy as you’ve felt; therefore, moderation is key. Also, be cautious of the other products you’re using in combination; they could potentially cause the redness, particularly if they contain strong essential oils or active ingredients. If your redness persists, it might be worth re-evaluating these products.

Lastly, observe how your skin responds and adjust your routine accordingly. If any irritations continue, consider consulting a local Ayurvedic practitioner for a more personalized assessment based your dosha and lifestyle.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
