For your little one, monitoring how they react to new foods is key, especially now that they’ve started solids. In Ayurveda, constipation often stems from an imbalance in Vata dosha, which relates to air and movement. We aim to balance that by adding warmth and moisture in gentle ways.
Fennel water can be a soothing choice for infants’ digestion. You could boil a half teaspoon of fennel seeds in a cup of water, then cool it entirely through. Strain the water and offer a teaspoon or so throughout the day. Babies typically respond well, as fennel is known for its calming effects on the tummy.
As for oils, castor oil is not typically recommended for infants. Instead, gentle abdominal massage with warm sesame oil may ease the discomfort. You’d do this by using circular motions around the navel, in a clockwise direction. It promote peristalsis, the movement of the intestines. If you’re comfortable, you might consult with a practitioner experienced in abyanga, as specific techniques help balance vata.
Regarding diet, avoid foods that may contribute to dryness, like bananas (surprisingly, right?) or heavy grains. Go softer: pureed squashes, sweet potatoes, or applesauce are easier to digest and help soften stools. Hydration is important too, offering sips of warm water throughout day can assist digestion. Sometimes, too much rice cereal can be binding; if it’s heavy in their diet, balance it with veggies and fruit.
To prevent recurring issues, ensure plenty of physical activity and playful tummy time, which naturally stimulate digestion. A routine that creates a sense of grounded stability can also help improve digestion over time.
Remember though, chronic constipation might need actual medical attention — a pediatrician should rule out any underlying conditions. Ayurvedic treatments offer gentle support but shouldn’t replace professional advice if things persist.
