why are my eyes watering - #36597

Lucas

I am struggling with this annoying problem where my eyes watering a lot, and I'm not sure why. It’s been happening for several weeks now, and it's like, every morning when I wake up, my eyes are all puffy and feel like… I dunno… they're leaking? I work at a computer most of the day and thought maybe it's because of that, but even at night when I’m just chilling, they still water. Last week, I went to see an eye doctor, and they told me my vision was fine and suggested maybe some allergy meds, but like, I’m not sneezing or anything, just watery eyes??? I also recently started cooking with a lot more spices (thanks to some online recipes), and my chest sometimes feels tight after eating. Could this have anything to do with why are my eyes watering like this? Like, should I be changing my diet? Or is it an imbalance or something? I’ve read a bit about Ayurvedic theory that says watery eyes can have something to do with excess pitta or doshas. Ugh, I just want to know what’s going on, because it’s really driving me nuts lately! Any insights or personal experiences would be super helpful!

Watery eyes can indeed be a result of several factors, including an imbalance in your doshas, especially if your lifestyle or diet has recently undergone changes. From an Ayurvedic perspective, excessive watering of the eyes may be linked to an imbalance in the Pitta dosha. Pitta, representative of fire and water elements, can become aggravated due to dietary changes, particularly the increased consumption of spicy foods. This could explain your observation of chest tightness after meals, as spicy foods can aggravate Pitta and lead to symptoms such as acidity or slight inflammation, which in turn might affect your eyes.

To address this imbalance, consider making some dietary adjustments. Try reducing your intake of spices and hot foods, opting for cooler and more calming foods that can pacify Pitta. Foods like cucumbers, melons, coriander, cilantro, and fennel can be incorporated into your meals to help balance the Pitta dosha.

Additionally, maintaining hydration is crucial. Drink sufficient water throughout the day, ensuring that your body and your eyes stay adequately hydrated. You may also benefit from soaking a clean cloth in cool rose water and placing it over your closed eyes for about 10-15 minutes daily, which provides a soothing effect and can reduce inflammation.

Since lifestyle factors also play a role in dosha imbalances, reduce screen time and take frequent breaks to give your eyes adequate rest. Consider practicing the “20-20-20 rule”; every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This can alleviate strain on your eyes involved from prolonged computer use.

However, if these adjustments aren’t bringing you relief, or if symptoms persist or worsen, it’s important to seek further professional medical evaluation. They can explore other potential causes and rule out any serious conditions. Remember, Ayurveda emphasizes a holistic approach to health, so you may find benefit in incorporating gentle yoga and meditation into your routine to help balance your overall Prakriti (constitution).

Watery eyes, especially when persistent, can indeed be a bit perplexing, particularly if other symptoms like sneezing are absent. In the Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, excess Pitta dosha, often attributable to heat, spicy foods, stress, or overuse of the eyes (like screen time), can lead to symptoms like watery eyes. An imbalance in Pitta affects the eyes because they are considered a Pitta site in Ayurveda.

With your recent increase in spice intake, particularly those that are heating in nature (like chili, black pepper, and garlic), it’s quite possible that your body’s Pitta is aggravated. Spices can affect both digestion and manifest in external signs, like watery eyes and tight chest, due to their heating quality and their impact on your agni. To reduce Pitta, consider including more cooling foods into your diet such as cucumber, cilantro, and fennel. These can help pacify the heat and potentially reduce your symptoms.

Incorporate cooling, non-spicy teas made with coriander seed, or a pinch of fennel, which can have calming effects on your system. Additionally, practice Trataka, a yogic gaze fixation exercise, which may help alleviate strain on your eyes by increasing the circulation and energy flow.

Make sure you are not overstressing your eyes by taking breaks during your computer work, ideally following the 20-20-20 rule (looking 20 feet away every 20 minutes for 20 seconds). Using a humidifier can also help maintain natural moisture levels, especially if indoor air is dry.

However, chest tightness with increasing spices can sometimes be a concern too. If symptoms persist or worsen, you should consult with a healthcare professional to rule out any other medical conditions that might need addressing beyond dietary and lifestyle adjustments. Remember, Ayurveda aims at restoring balance thoughtfully but should not replace immediate medical attention if you feel urgency in symptoms like chest tightness.
