how long does ashwagandha take to work - #38883
I am really curious about this ashwagandha thing. Lately, I’ve been feeling super stressed with work and everything, and a friend recommended I try ashwagandha for some calmness. I started taking it about two weeks ago and honestly, I'm just wondering, how long does ashwagandha take to work? Like, I read various things online, but it seems everyone has a different take, ya know? Some say a few days, some are like, “Nah, it takes weeks!” I thought I’d feel chill by now, but I’m kinda still all over the place. I’m also not sure if I’m taking the right dose; I’ve been taking the capsules but am thinking maybe the powder would be better? Or does that even matter? I’ve also been noticing some random digestive issues.. Not sure if that’s related or if it’s just me stress eating junk these days. 🤔 Anyway, I really just want to know how long does ashwagandha take to work, or what should I expect? Should I be patient or find something else? Any advice or experiences would really help!

Ashwagandha’s effects can vary quite a bit from person, depending on several factors, including your individual constitution (prakriti), the nature of your stress, and your lifestyle. Generally, meaningful benefits from ashwagandha might be noticeable after a couple of weeks of consistent use, for some people, it could take about 4 to 8 weeks to observe significant changes. It’s worthy to remember that Ayurveda emphasizes personalized treatment, and sometimes adjustments are necessary. If you haven’t felt much difference after two weeks, it’s not necessarily a sign it’s not working.
Regarding dosage, both form – capsules and powders – are effective, but they do function slightly differently. Capsules are more convenient and can be taken twice daily ideally after meals; each often contains around 300-500 mg. For the powder, which is traditionally used in Ayurveda, about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon mixed in warm milk or water daily is suggested, preferably in the morning or before bed as it can support better sleep. It’s important that whatever form you use, it’s of high quality.
Your digestive issues could be related to ashwagandha, or perhaps more linked to your stress levels and diet. Ashwagandha can upset an agitated or Pitta-type digestive system, promoting excessive heat, which might worsen if stress eating is involved. Consider examining your diet for excess processed or spicy foods and see if reducing those makes a difference. You might find digestion or stress relief by integrating some calming food like fresh fruits, cooked vegetables, or warm herbal teas into your daily routine.
If after some time you don’t observe beneficial effects, consider consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can better tailor recommendations based on a full evaluation of your health and stressors. Don’t forget, managing stress often requires a multi-faceted approach, including lifestyle modifications, and mind-body balance practices like yoga or meditation.
