For a condition such as interstitial lung disease (ILD) and the degree of fibrosis, it’s crucial to understand Ayurvedic support can be complementary to conventional treatment rather than a replacement, especially given her oxygen dependency and hypertension. Working closely with her medical team is vital here.
In Ayurveda, lung fibrosis can relate to imbalances in Vata and Kapha doshas. The congestion and excessive mucus production (cough with white phlegm) point towards Kapha imbalance. Anti-inflammatory measures which help in pacifying Vata and Kapha and promoting lung health is key.
First, focus on her diet. Warm, light, and easily digestible foods can help to balance Kapha. Avoid cold, heavy, and oily foods which can exacerbate mucus production. Ginger tea, and pepper, can support decongestion, a combination known in Ayurveda for reducing Kapha. Additionally, including turmeric milk at night (with a pinch of black pepper for absorption) can encourage better lung function and reduce inflammation.
Her lifestyle should include gentle breathing exercises. While pranayama should be approached with caution, simple techniques like diaphragmatic breathing can be practiced. Start with a few minutes and increase gradually based on comfort within her limits, without the need to strain.
Regarding herbal preparations, Ayurvedic classics often mention Pippali (Piper Longum) and Vasaka (Justicia adhatoda) for respiratory support. However, it’s essential to consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before introducing these herbs, as they needs to align with her specific constitution and current health status.
Continue monitoring her oxygen saturation and ensure that medical intervention is immediate if her conditions fluctuates. Regular check-ups with her healthcare provider ensures she receives the best possible combination of conventional and Ayurvedic care.
