how to reach thekkady from chennai - #40111

Claire

I am planning a trip and really need some help figuring out how to reach Thekkady from Chennai. It’s been on my list forever, and finally, I got the chance to go! I want to experience all the nature and wildlife there. But here’s the thing, I honestly have no clue about the best way to get there. I mean, do I take a bus, train, or maybe even drive myself? I’ve heard that taking a bus can be super long and tiring, but my friend said trains might not be all that great either. Just yesterday, I was looking at some maps, and it looks like Thekkady is quite a distance from Chennai, like 500-600 km or something. I could really use some advice on the best routes. I've even thought about flying, but then I have to think about more transport from the airport to Thekkady, which just sounds like a hassle. Seriously, how to reach Thekkady from Chennai without losing my mind or spending a ton? And what about that Kerala monsoon season? I heard it can be tricky to travel then, but I’m wondering if there are still good options. I’d love your thoughts or experiences on how to make this journey smoother. Thanks a bunch!

I’m an Ayurvedic physician, so my expertise is mainly in health and medicine rather than travel. I can offer some health-related advice for travel preparedness, such as how to maintain your wellbeing while on the road, especially during monsoon season, which can indeed be a bit tricky.

When traveling long distances like from Chennai to Thekkady, especially during monsoon season, it’s wise to strengthen your immune system to prevent illnesses that often occur during wetter months. Ayurvedically, drinking warm herbal teas like Tulsi (holy basil) can be beneficial as it helps in boosting immunity. If you’re prone to motion sickness during travel, consider keeping a small pouch of dry ginger powder with you. Ginger helps in combating nausea and improves digestion which might get disturbed on long journeys.

Carry light snacks that balance vata dosha, which often gets aggravated during monsoon. Simple snacks like roasted almonds or soaked raisins could provide good energy. If you go by bus or train, choose an aisle seat or a space where you can stretch occasionally; it prevents stiffness and enhances circulation. For hydration, prefer sipping warm water throughout the journey—it aids in keeping your agni (digestive fire) strong and balances toxins.

Ensure you have rain gear and quick-drying clothes. Post-travel, rejuvenating yourself with Triphala at night could support your digestive system and help detoxify your body from any travel stresses. If you find it difficult to manage any travel-related discomfort, seeking immediate health advice from a nearby Ayurveda physician is a good step. Besides, staying tuned to weather updates will also be smart, especially during the unpredictable Kerala monsoon.
