To try taking triphala with milk, warm the milk gently (not boiling) and mix about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of triphala powder. Consume it about 30 minutes before bedtime, which can also contribute to calming the mind and supporting better sleep. However, if this combination still doesn’t agree with you, it would be sensible to switch back to water and see if the discomfort persists. You can adjust the timing as well, testing whether taking it earlier in the evening or at another time of day feels better.
