Hello Anil, As a parent, I know that this is a worry that weighs on your mind. Severe hay fever is capable of impacting breathing, sleep, concentration, and even confidence in daily life. However, do not be anxious. Ayurveda treats allergic rhinitis very well both in the short-term and for long-term root-level correction.
✅AYURVEDIC UNDERSTANDING
👉Doshic Pathology Kapha aggravation: congestion, stuffy nose, throat mucus Vata aggravation: shortness of breath, chest tightness, heaviness Pitta involvement: high IgE, hypersensitivity, inflammation
👉Why symptoms worsen in spring (Melbourne Oct–Dec) External Vata + Kapha aggravation Pollen load is increased = allergen overload Air is dry and cold = Vata aggravation The body becomes extremely sensitive (allergic samskara)
Therefore, the treatment has two components: 1. Long-term Rasayana & Immuno-modulation 2. Seasonal protocol (Oct–Dec) for pollen peak control
✅AYURVEDIC PLAN OF TREATMENT
✅INTERNAL MEDICATION
👉For reducing allergic hypersensitivity (Rasayana)
1 Haridrakhanda – ½ tsp twice daily with warm water (Reduces IgE reactivity, stabilizes mast cells, prevents seasonal flare-ups.)
2 Sitopaladi Churna – ½ tsp + Honey twice daily (Resolves stuffiness, heals the throat, strengthens the lungs.)
👉 To strengthen Pranavaha Srotas (Lungs)
3 Talisadi Churna – ½ tsp after meals (Reduces chest tightness, increases deep breathing capacity.)
👉 To stabilize immunity (Ojas-enhancing)
4 Chyawanprash (sugar-free if needed) – 1 tsp every morning ( Helps to reduce long-term susceptibility to pollen.)
✅ SHODHANA SUPPORT (Mild Cleansing)
1. Nasal Cleansing – Daily Anu Taila Nasya 2 drops in each nostril every morning before bath Reduces nasal reactivity to pollen Heals mucosal inflammation Rasayana par excellence for allergic rhinitis
2. Steam Inhalation (Svedana) Steam + ajwain OR eucalyptus oil Use 5 minutes in the evening Clears stuffiness + helps open the blocked Pranavaha Srotas
✅ SEASONAL. PROTOCOL
This is imperative for Melbourne’s pollen season.
1. Pre-season (Start 4 weeks before October): Start Haridrakhanda daily Begin Anu Taila Nasya daily Reduce dairy and cold foods
2. During peak season (Oct-Dec):
👉 Sheetopachara Chikitsa Use only warm water Do not walk outdoor in the morning Cover your nose when going out Take a shower after coming home (removes pollen from hair & skin)
✅Seasonal Ayurveda Medicines:
Take them during the high-pollen days: 1.Pranahari Vati (or Sangrahi Vati) 1 tablet twice daily for acute congestion
2 Giloy Ghanvati – 1 tablet twice daily It helps to control Pitta-mediated allergic reactions
✅ HOME REMEDIES
1.Methi Kadha (continue but modify): Holy basil leaves (tulsi) ¼ tsp dry ginger ¼ tsp turmeric (Makes it anti-allergic & anti-inflammatory)
2. Turmeric + Honey Paste ½ tsp turmeric + 1 tsp honey (Reduces IgE response, helps to open airways)
3. Saltwater Gargles (Daily evening to relieve throat congestion)
4. Warm water with Tulsi + Black pepper Helps lungs get stronger & reduces the hypersensitivity
5. Apply Mustard Oil to Nostrils (night) Makes pollen a physical barrier against you
✅ DIET MODIFICATION
✔️Foods to Include ( anti-Kapha + anti-allergic ) Warm water Ginger tea Turmeric milk (warm, not cold) Moong dal khichdi Steamed vegetables Garlic soup Tulsi, cinnamon, black pepper
❌Foods to Avoid (increase Kapha & congestion)
Curd Cold milk & ice cream Bananas at night Oily, fried foods Bakery items Cold drinks Wheat-based heavy meals Excess sugar
✅LIFESTYLE MODIFICATION
Don’t go outside during early morning when the pollen count is high Close bedroom windows during pollen peak Wear a mask when you are outside During the pollen period, wash your hair regularly
Warm Regards Dr Snehal Vidhate
