can we put ghee in nose daily - #43700
I am really curious about something. Lately, I've been feeling super congested and dry in my sinuses. Like, no matter what I do, it just doesn’t clear up! I read somewhere about putting ghee in the nose every day, and I thought I should give it a try since it’s supposed to be good for nasal health and keeping things moist or something. Can we put ghee in nose daily? A friend recommended it after hearing about my issues, and she's all into Ayurveda, saying it helps with dryness, allergy stuff, and it supposedly can even “clear the mind”. I don’t know, I’m a bit skeptical. But honestly, I did try it once last week, and it felt weird but kinda good?? I guess. Just worried about overdoing it because I don't wanna cause irritation or anything worse. Like, is there a limit or a right way to do it? I’ve read mixed things about how often to use it. Should I be careful about the quantity? Or, is it more like just a few drops and that’s it? Can we put ghee in nose daily without any issues? Looking for some wisdom from you guys. Would appreciate any advice!

Using ghee in the nose, or ‘Nasya’, is indeed a common practice in Ayurveda and can be quite beneficial, especially for dryness in the nasal passages and creating a sense of clarity. Typically, it involves placing a few drops of warm ghee into each nostril. This practice helps in moisturizing the nasal passages, offering relief from dryness and congestion. It’s known to potentially aid in easing allergies and promoting mental clarity.
However, incorporating ghee into your daily routine requires a few considerations. It’s generally safe to use one or two drops in each nostril daily. Nonetheless, if you’re experiencing significant congestion or an excess of Kapha (one of the Ayurvedic doshas associated with mucus), you should proceed with caution. Excessive use of ghee in this case might aggravate the issue rather than relieve it.
It’s crucial to focus on the quality of the ghee. Use organic, cow’s clarified butter that’s pure and without additives. Warm the ghee to body temperature and gently apply it in the morning, preferably on an empty stomach or at least, not immediately after a meal. You may tilt your head back slightly while doing this to ensure proper absorption.
If you feel discomfort or if symptoms persist, it’s wise to reevaluate its usage. Also, avoid using it during cold or cloudy days since it might cause the opposite effect and increase Kapha in the body.
Though Nasya is beneficial, if you notice irritation, discomfort, or feelings of unease after application, it’s prudent to discontinue and consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner. In cases of chronic congestion or sinus issues, further analysis of your prakriti and lifestyle might be necessary to assess a deeper imbalance that may require other interventions.
Ultimately, while daily application can be okay for many, moderation and awareness of your body’s signals should guide you, along with regular consultation with a qualified Ayurvedic expert to tailor your regimen.
