Confused About Food Combinations to Avoid – Could My Daily Diet Be Causing Issues - #1379

Asher

For the past few months, I’ve been feeling bloated and sluggish almost every day. At first, I thought it was stress, but now I’m wondering if it’s something I’m eating. 😟 I’ve been making healthy smoothies in the morning (usually banana, milk, and honey) and having a big salad with cheese for lunch. I recently read somewhere that mixing fruits with dairy is a big no-no in Ayurveda. Could these ‘wrong’ food combinations be the reason for my constant discomfort? I’ve also been pairing yogurt with fruits like strawberries and adding lemon juice to almost every meal. Now I’m paranoid that I’ve been doing everything wrong! Can someone please tell me which food combos I should avoid according to Ayurveda? I want to get this right before making more changes to my diet.

Yes, according to Ayurveda, certain food combinations can indeed disrupt digestion and lead to discomfort like bloating and sluggishness. Mixing fruits with dairy, especially milk, is considered problematic because it can create ama (toxins) in the body due to the incompatible digestion of these foods. For example, combining bananas with milk can be heavy on the digestive system. Similarly, yogurt with fruits or citrus (like lemon juice) is often discouraged, as it can imbalance your digestion and lead to fermentation in the stomach, causing gas and bloating. To improve digestion, focus on eating fruits alone or with light, easy-to-digest foods like nuts, and keep dairy separate from fruits. It’s also helpful to avoid combining heavy foods (like cheese or yogurt) with raw, cold, or acidic foods. Consider eating warm, cooked meals with easily digestible ingredients to support your digestive fire (Agni).

I totally get why you're feeling a bit overwhelmed with all this food combo info, it's can be a lot! So, let's dive in and tackle what might be causing these bloating and sluggish feeling. According to Ayurveda, the principle of Viruddha Ahara or "incompatible foods" is big thing and can really affect how we feel. First, the combination of banana, milk, and honey in your smoothie may be causing some issues. Despite bananas being super yummy with milk, Ayurveda sees them as conflicting — the different qualities and digestion process of each can confuse your digestive fire (Agni) leading to bloating or sluggish feelings. You could try replacing the milk with almond milk or coconut milk and see if that helps your morning routine. Cheese with big salads can also be heavy to digest, especially if the salad includes raw veggies that can dampen Agni when paired with cheese. Perhaps consider incorporating lightly cooked or steamed veggies instead of fully raw ones, to make it easier on your stomach. Now about the yogurt and fruit pairings, this combo is often flagged in Ayurveda, too. Yogurt's sour nature can clash with sweet fruits, disrupting digestion in the process. If you're looking for ways to enjoy yogurt, maybe try it plain or with a little honey or some gentle spices like cumin or coriander which aids digestion. Adding lemon juice everywhere sounds zesty but too much can irritate Agni too! Instead, enjoy it sparingly, not with every single dish, and try warm lemon water in morning for a gentle start to the day. Small tweaks to how we combine foods can actually make a big difference. We'd really pay attention to how you feel after making these little changes, it's like listening what your body says.
