What is terbinafine used for, and how effective is it for fungal infections? - #14657

Anonymous

I was recently prescribed terbinafine for a fungal infection, but I don’t know much about it. I read that it’s an antifungal medication, but how does it actually work? What are the most common conditions terbinafine is used for? I know it’s often prescribed for toenail fungus and ringworm, but does it also work for scalp or skin infections? How long does it take to see results, and does the infection ever come back after stopping the medication? I also read that terbinafine can have side effects, especially for the liver. How common are these side effects, and what should I watch out for? Are there natural antifungal remedies that work as well as terbinafine, or is this the best option for stubborn infections? If anyone has taken terbinafine before, did it work for you? How long did you need to take it, and did you experience any side effects?

Doctors’ responses

1. How Terbinafine Works: Terbinafine is an antifungal medication that works by inhibiting the production of ergosterol, a key component in the fungal cell membrane. This weakens the cell membrane, causing the fungi to die and helping to clear the infection. 2. Common Conditions Treated: Terbinafine is commonly prescribed for: Toenail fungus (onychomycosis) Ringworm (tinea corporis) Athlete's foot (tinea pedis) Scalp infections (tinea capitis) It’s effective for both skin and nail fungal infections. 3. Time to See Results: It can take several weeks to months to see results, especially for nail infections, as the infected area needs to grow out. For skin infections, you might notice improvement within a few weeks. It's important to complete the prescribed course to prevent the infection from returning. 4. Side Effects to Watch For: While most people tolerate terbinafine well, side effects can include: Liver issues (e.g., jaundice, fatigue, stomach pain) Gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., nausea, diarrhea) Skin rashes or other allergic reactions Headaches Your doctor may monitor liver function with blood tests during treatment to ensure safety. 5. Natural Remedies: Some natural remedies, like tea tree oil, garlic, and coconut oil, are known to have antifungal properties. However, terbinafine is often more effective for persistent infections, especially in severe cases or nail fungus. Natural remedies may work for mild cases or as adjuncts, but they aren't generally considered as strong or reliable as antifungal medications like terbinafine. If you’ve used terbinafine, it's helpful to follow the prescribed duration and let your doctor know about any side effects you experience.
