Cough with lots of mucus for 2 weeks - #16031

Rajesh

About 2 weeks ago, out of the blue. At first it was just a mild throat irritation, nothing serious. But after a couple of days the cough became constant and thick mucus. I wake up in the morning and it's the worst thing - my chest is heavy and I have to clear my throat constantly. The mucus is mostly white, sometimes yellowish. No fever, no body aches, but this cough with mucus for 2 weeks just won't go away. I don't smoke. I tried some honey with warm water, it helps a little, but not for long. Someone suggested turmeric milk, but honestly I don't see much of a difference. Should I be worried that this cough with mucus for 2 weeks is still lingering? They say that milk and dairy products cause a lot of mucus in the body, is this true? What natural remedies can help me get rid of the cough?

Namaste, A cough with thick mucus for 2 weeks could be due to postnasal drip, lingering viral infection, mild bronchitis, or excess Kapha (mucus accumulation) in Ayurveda. Since you have no fever or body aches, it is unlikely to be a severe bacterial infection, but persistent mucus production suggests ongoing inflammation or congestion in the respiratory tract. White mucus usually indicates mild congestion, while yellowish mucus may suggest mild infection or inflammation. Dairy products, especially cold milk and heavy foods, can increase mucus production in some individuals, particularly if you have a Kapha imbalance. Try avoiding milk, yogurt, and cheese for a few days to see if it helps. For relief, ginger tea with honey and black pepper, Tulsi (holy basil) tea, and steam inhalation with eucalyptus or ajwain (carom seeds) can help clear mucus. Turmeric milk is more effective when taken with a pinch of black pepper and ghee to enhance absorption and reduce throat irritation. To get rid of lingering mucus, practice spiced warm water gargles (turmeric, salt, and ginger), drink warm water throughout the day, and try Sitopaladi Churna or Talisadi Churna (Ayurvedic herbal blends for respiratory health). If symptoms persist beyond 3-4 weeks, worsen, or cause breathing difficulty, consult a doctor to rule out sinus infection or chronic bronchitis.
