Doctors' responses

Suvarnamukthadi Gulika is a classical Ayurvedic formulation mainly used for disorders of the brain, nerves and mind. It is traditionally indicated in memory loss, confusion, reduced awareness, speech difficulty, tremors, paralysis like conditions, weakness of nerves, and chronic Vata dominant neurological problems. It is also used in elderly patients where there is decline in mental function, poor coordination, fearfulness, restlessness or dullness of mind. Because it contains potent ingredients, it works as a rasayana for the nervous system when used correctly in very small doses. It helps in stabilizing Vata dosha, nourishing majja dhatu, supporting brain cells and improving nerve conduction. However, it is a strong medicine and must always be given carefully, especially in old age and weak digestion.

For 83 year old woman, with symptoms of long standing memory loss, inability to talk properly, inability to walk and severe body weakness clearly point towards chronic Vata prakopa with dhatu kshaya. The poor appetite shows that agni is very weak, which is common in advanced age. Since these complaints are present for more than six months and there has been no prior treatment, the condition is deep rooted and recovery will naturally be slow.

In such a case, Suvarnamukthadi Gulika can be given, but only as a supportive medicine and not as a curative drug. The tablet should be rubbed on a clean stone with a few drops of honey or warm water, and only a very small quantity of the paste should be given, starting with an amount equal to a rice grain. This should be given once daily in the morning, after food. Giving it on an empty stomach should be avoided because her digestion is poor.

The expected benefit in her condition would be gradual ,It may help in slowing further memory decline, improving mental alertness slightly, supporting nerve strength and reducing excessive Vata related weakness. Over time, there may be mild improvement in awareness, calmness, response to surroundings or stability, but complete reversal is not possible at this age and stage. The main aim is to improve quality of life and prevent further deterioration.

Along with this medicine, proper diet and daily care are extremely important. She should take very soft, warm, freshly cooked food in small quantities several times a day. Thin rice gruel with a little ghee, moong dal water and light vegetable soups are ideal. Cold food, dry food and heavy items should be avoided. oil massage with warm sesame oil helps reduce stiffness and supports the nervous system.

Because she is unable to speak and walk, and this is the first time treatment is being started after many months, it is important that she is also evaluated by a physician to rule out conditions like old stroke damage, severe anemia or other neurological causes. Ayurveda works best when serious conditions are identified and managed appropriately.

After starting Suvarnamukthadi Gulika, she should be closely observed. If there is vomiting, excessive drowsiness, refusal to eat or any worsening of weakness, the medicine should be stopped and medical advice taken immediately. With careful use, proper diet and this medicine can be a support in her condition rather than a risk.
