What are her thyroid levels and weight? It’s good that your mother’s thyroid and blood pressure are under medical supervision but before suggesting Ayurvedic management would want to know these details. In Ayurveda, an overactive thyroid is often linked to a Pitta and Vata imbalance, which can cause symptoms like anxiety, restlessness, and a persistent cough. The cough may result from throat irritation due to thyroid enlargement or excess Pitta. A Pitta-pacifying diet with cooling foods like cucumber, coconut water, and leafy greens is recommended, while spicy, fried, and salty foods should be avoided. Including antioxidant-rich foods like berries, pomegranate, and amla can also be beneficial. Staying hydrated with warm water or herbal teas like coriander or mint tea can soothe the throat. Light exercises, gentle yoga, and breathing practices like Bhramari and Anulom Vilom can calm the mind and balance hormones. Daily oil massages with coconut or almond oil help relax the body and reduce stress. For the cough, a mixture of honey, turmeric, and warm water or licorice tea can provide relief, and steam inhalation with ajwain or mint leaves may ease irritation. Since she recently experienced high blood pressure, it’s essential to monitor it regularly.

Hello Sursanda, could you share more details on her thyroid function tests, such as TSH, T3, and T4 levels? Also, has she undergone any chest X-ray or other tests to investigate the cause of the chronic cough? In Ayurveda, for overactive thyroid, we focus on balancing the Vata and Pitta doshas and supporting the thyroid with herbs like Ashwagandha and Guggulu. For her cough, expectorants like Tulsi, Pippali, and licorice may help, but the root cause of the cough should be addressed first. In the case of high blood pressure and migraines, managing stress, maintaining a balanced diet, and including calming herbs like Brahmi and Ashwagandha can help. Has her blood pressure and thyroid been monitored regularly?

It sounds like your mom's dealing with a challenging situation, especially with an overactive thyroid, which is basically hyperthyroidism. This condition can indeed cause a variety of symptoms including that persistent cough, high blood pressure, and even migrains. Since she's already on medication, it's crucial she keeps in touch with her doctor to ensure her treatment is on track. In Ayurveda, the focus would be on balancing the doshas that might be causing the thyroid dysfunction. Hyperthyroidism is often linked to an imbalance of Pitta dosha, leading to its excessive activity. Besides continuing the current medication, incorporating Ayurvedic practices might help in supporting her overall well-being. Dietary changes could be quite beneficial. Encourage her to include cooling foods in her diet, like cucumber, coconut water, and fresh leafy greens, which can help soothe Pitta. Avoid spicy foods, caffeine, and excess salt as they may aggravate Pitta further. Small, frequent meals that are easy to digest maintain a calm mind and stable energy levels. Maintaining a regular daily routine can also be helpful. Encourage her to wake up early before sunrise, and avoid late nights, as a balance in sleeping patterns supports hormonal function. Gentle yoga or meditation can act as calming influence on her mind and body. Pranayama, specifically, can be excellent in managing stress and calming excessive Pitta activity. On herbs front, Ashwagandha and Brahmi can be supportive, but be sure to consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before starting any herbal supplements, especially since she’s already on medication. Ensuring this approach keeps everything in harmony with her existing treatment is key. Lastly, monitor her blood pressure regularly, because hyperthyroidism can sometimes make it fluctuate. If she has any concerning symptoms, seek urgent medical attention without delay. Always working closely with her healthcare providers is best, to ensure her thyroid levels stay in balance and symptoms are managed effectively. This combined approach can help her in overcoming the effects of an overactive thyroid.
