When dealing with a pressure sore, especially for someone with existing conditions like arthritis, it’s important to integrate both modern and Ayurvedic approaches to promote healing. First and foremost, continue following medical advice regarding antibiotics and pressure dressings, as these are crucial for infection control and wound management.

In Ayurveda, pressure sores align with the concept of vata and pitta aggravation, leading to an imbalance that affects the skin (twak dhatu). Here are some suggestions you could consider, carefully aligning with the current medical treatments she is receiving.

Diet is essential in supporting wound healing. Encourage foods that pacify vata and pitta, like warm, cooked meals seasoned with turmeric and ginger, which are known for anti-inflammatory properties. Encourage her to drink plenty of water and herbal teas, like chamomile, to maintain hydration and support circulation.

For topical application, traditional Ayurvedic oils such as Jatyadi Oil can be helpful. Gently apply this oil around the sore, without touching the open wound itself, to facilitate healthy skin and tissue regeneration.

Support her with Ayurvedic herbs internally, such as Ashwagandha and Amalaki, as these may strengthen overall immunity and improve vitality. However, it’s vital to consult with her doctor before introducing any new herbs or supplements to ensure no interactions with her current medications.

Regular and gentle movement can improve circulation, yet ensure she isn’t straining her knees. Consider guided, low-impact exercises, under the supervision of a physio if possible, to enhance oxygen flow to affected areas. Maintain cleanliness and dryness around the sore areas to help manage moisture build-up from skin folds being in contact.

If she’s experiencing severe pain, make sure to discuss suitable pain management options with her healthcare provider. Ensure someone checks on her frequently for changes in the sore’s condition. If it worsens or shows signs of increased infection, like redness or increased discharge, prioritize immediate medical attention. Following these steps could support her recovery while safeguarding against further complications.
