Glaucoma complaint is curable or not? - #24680

C.B.

After the surgery for heart in the year 2012, my left eye vision reduced slowly, and now I have 10% vision only. I'm having doubts that my right eye also will be affected due to glaucoma in the future. I'm using eye drops for both eyes. Please clear my doubt. Glaucoma is curable one or not.

Glaucoma (known as Adhimantha in Ayurveda) is a condition that causes gradual vision loss due to increased eye pressure damaging the optic nerve. While it cannot be completely cured, both modern and Ayurvedic treatments can help slow its progress. You are already using eye drops, which is essential to control the pressure. Along with that, Ayurvedic therapies like Netratarpanam (eye rejuvenation with medicated ghee), Nasya (nasal drops with herbal oils), and lepa (medicated eye packs) help nourish the optic nerves and improve circulation around the eyes. Internal medications like Triphala ghee, Punarnavadi kashaya, or Saptamrita Lauha may also be advised to support eye health. Most importantly, regular follow-ups, proper diet, stress reduction, and avoiding eye strain are crucial to preserve the remaining vision and prevent damage to the other eye.

Glaucoma, in Ayurveda, is considered a type of “Timira” or “Kacha,” affecting the eyes and causing gradual vision loss. In modern medicine, glaucoma involves increased intraocular pressure, leading to optic nerve damage and potential vision loss if untreated. Generally, it’s considered manageable rather than completely curable.

Combining Ayurvedic therapies with your current medical regimen may help manage symptoms and support eye health. Ayurveda emphasizes balancing the “Tridoshas” (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) to improve eye health. For glaucoma, focusing on maintaining Pitta balance can be crucial, as imbalances might exacerbate the condition. Here’s what you can consider integrating:

1. Diet: Incorporate foods rich in antioxidants, like leafy greens, amla (Indian gooseberry), and carrots. Avoid hot, spicy, and sour foods which might aggravate Pitta.

2. Eye Exercises: Simple eye exercises, such as focusing on near and far objects, can stimulate eye muscles. Practice these gently to avoid strain.

3. Herbal Support: Triphala, a well-known Ayurvedic formulation, can aid in detoxifying the eyes and supporting overall eye health. You might consider taking it as powder with warm water at night, under guidance of a medical professional.

4. Eye Wash: Use Triphala water for an eye wash. Soak overnight a teaspoon of Triphala in water, strain it in the morning and gently use to wash your eyes. Ensure cleanliness to avoid infections.

While these steps could help maintain eye health, it’s important to continue with your prescribed medication and regular check-ups with an ophthalmologist. Glaucoma’s progression can be controlled effectively with the right balance of Ayurvedic principles and modern medical interventions, but it’s generally not considered fully curable once significant damage has occurred. Continuous monitoring and adherence to treatment is essential to safeguard your vision. Prioritize collaboration with your healthcare professional to devise a strategy that suits your specific health needs.
