Will Ashwaganda and Guggul interact with my thyroid meds. - #26361
I have been diagnosed with underactive thyroid in January this year and put on Lexo 50mg. which brought thyroid level to normal. I am now planning on doing the The Prime detox by dr. Kulreet Chaundhary and I see that Aswagandga, Guggul and Brahmi might cause thryroid function changes. I will appreciate the advise on how to approach it? Thank you very much. Natalia

Doctors’ responses
Most of the ayurvedic medicine donot contradict allopathy medicine Keep gap of 45 minutes between the two systems of medicine. Ashwagandha, guggul, Brahmi are herbal medicine, will not interfere with thyroid function, but will be added advantage.
These medicines are not treatment for thyroid, they’re supporting supplements. So stopping allopathy thinking these medicines will bring normal c values is not possible
Thank you very much! Your reply is much appreciated. If these herbs will be an added advantage, will they not cause my thyroid getting back to normal levels without taking lexo? I do not want to end up in a situation where my thyroid will start being over active.
Thank you very much! You are appreciated :)
Yes,without any doubt you can take these too… No need to worry about this.🙂
As someone managing an underactive thyroid condition, it’s crucial to consider how various herbs may impact your thyroid function, especially while on medication like Levothyroxine (Lexo). Ashwagandha can stimulate thyroid activity, while Guggul is traditionally known for supporting thyroid health. Both could potentially influence your thyroid medication’s effects, so it’s important to approach the detox plan carefully.
Before you start The Prime detox, consult your healthcare provider. They could help adjust your current medication based on any changes in your symptoms or thyroid function during or after including these herbs in your regimen. Regular monitoring of your thyroid function is essential, ideally every 4-6 weeks when you first incorporate these herbs.
If you wish to proceed, start with small doses of Ashwagandha and Guggul. Usually, a dose-well below recommended may help mitigate potential interactions with your thyroid meds. This approach allows your body to gradually adapt and gives you a chance to notice any changes. For Brahmi, while its direct impact on the thyroid isn’t as prominent, keep an eye on any cognitive or metabolic changes you might experience.
In Ayurveda, the balance of your doshas, especially Kapha, which can be linked with thyroid imbalance, is vital. Besides the herbal suggestions, focus on lifestyle changes that support Kapha balance. Incorporate light exercise, favor warming spices to boost Agni (digestive fire), and maintain a Kapha-pacifying diet avoiding heavy, cold, or excessively oily foods.
This holistic approach, along with regular monitoring and professional guidance, can ensure a safer integration of these Ayurvedic herbs and practices with your current treatment. Stay patient and attentive to how your body responds, and make adjustments softly.
When considering supplements like Ashwagandha, Guggul, and Brahmi alongside your thyroid medication, there are few things to keep in mind. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is known for its adaptogenic properties, and it can potentially regulate thyroid hormone levels, potentially boosting thyroid function. In some individuals, it may support thyroid activity, so while taking Levothyroxine (Lexo) having your thyroid levels monitored regularly is advised.
Guggul, derived from the resin of the Commiphora mukul tree, has been traditionally used in Ayurveda to stimulate thyroid function, thus potentially further enhancing thyroid hormone production. Given its potential to boost thyroid activity, it’s crucial to consult with your healthcare provider to assess how it might interact with your current medication.
Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), primarily used for cognitive enhancement, does not directly affect thyroid function but can have supportive role for overall mental clarity, which might be beneficial if you are experiencing fatigue or mental fog, common with thyroid imbalances.
Before integrating these supplements, consulting both your Ayurvedic and allopathic healthcare providers is paramount. Frequent monitoring of TSH levels can ensure that your thyroid hormones remain within a normal range, particularly if you’re introducing natural supplements that might stimulate thyroid function.
Regarding the Prime Detox plan by Dr. Kulreet Chaudhary, make sure each step aligns with what your body truly needs now. If pursuing detox, understand its intensity and watch your body’s response, stopping if any adverse symptoms occur. Consider timing these supplements based on your body’s rhythm - for instance, taking Ashwagandha at night might aid restfulness, while Guggul could be taken in the morning if stimulating, but always as directed by professionals familiar with your health history.
