does ashwagandha increase dht - #39817
I am trying to figure out something about Ashwagandha. Been experiencing some weird stuff lately since I started taking supplements. Got really into herbal remedies after reading about all the benefits, especially for stress. Ashwagandha seemed like a safe bet but now I’m worried!! My buddy mentioned that does ashwagandha increase DHT and it freaked me out. I really don’t want anything messing with my hormones like that. I already have this thick hair but my hairline is a little more receded than I’d like. Someone even told me ashwagandha could actually make it worse, which, um, no thanks! I was having anxiety issues and heard ashwagandha can help, but at this point, I’m debating if I should keep taking it. The other day, I noticed my skin feeling kinda oily, which is not usual for me, and a few pimples popped up too. Is that a sign of hormone changes? I guess I just wanna know if anybody else has faced this concern about Ashwagandha and if does ashwagandha increase DHT is something I should actually worry about or if it’s just a rumor? Hoping to hear from you all before I make any decisions. Thanks!

Ashwagandha, a popular adaptogenic herb in Ayurveda, is often known for its benefits in managing stress and enhancing vitality. However, the topic of Ashwagandha’s effect on DHT (dihydrotestosterone) levels is a bit murky and not extensively covered in classical Ayurvedic texts like Charaka Samhita or Sushruta Samhita. Current studies and anecdotal evidence on Ashwagandha’s impact on DHT are limited, conflicting, and not entirely conclusive.
Ashwagandha is generally not directly linked to increasing DHT levels, which are often associated with hair loss issues such as androgenetic alopecia. Instead, Ashwagandha is known to balance body systems, adapt to stress, and improve overall vitality and strength. However, some individuals might respond differently due to their unique prakriti (constitution) or any existing hormonal imbalances.
Given your concern about receding hairline and noticing increased skin oiliness (which could indicate shifts in hormonal levels), it might be prudent to pause Ashwagandha supplementation and closely observe any changes in your condition. You should consult with a healthcare provider or an Ayurvedic practitioner to thoroughly evaluate your symptoms and consider other possible causes and treatments.
In terms of managing stress without risking your existing hair condition, consider focusing on diet and lifestyle optimization first. Consume foods that are sattvic (pure) and pitta-pacifying like fresh fruits, whole grains, and cooling milk. Practice calming yoga, pranayama, and meditation to reduce anxiety. Also, maintain regular sleep habits, ensuring you’re well rested to prevent stress.
Lastly, it’s essential to remember: each individual’s response to herbal remedies can vary. Ideally, Ashwagandha or any herbal supplement should be used under the guidance of a qualified professional to ensure it aligns with your dosha balance and personal health needs, avoiding any potential side effects.
