Managing chronic cough and lung issues, especially while on long-term oxygen therapy, demands careful attention and holistic care. In Ayurveda, excess mucus or phlegm is often related to an imbalance of the Kapha dosha. Here are some steps to consider with your condition, but these should complement any existing medical treatment:

1) Diet Considerations: Avoid dairy products, bananas, and cold foods, as they can contribute to phlegm production. Favor warm, cooked meals — soups or broths made with ginger, cumin, and garlic can be particularly beneficial.

2) Herbal Preparations: Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties. Consider having a warm turmeric milk at night; combine half a teaspoon of turmeric in a cup of warm milk or plant-based milk, and sweeten with a little honey.

3) Steam Inhalation: This can help to loosen mucus in the lungs. Boil water and pour it into a bowl, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil and cover your head with a towel as you inhale deeply for about 5 –7 minutes. Do this twice daily.

4) Pranayama Exercises: Gentle breathing exercises like Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) can help improve lung capacity. Spend 5 minutes each day practicing this in a quiet environment.

5) Digestive Support: As antibiotics may disrupt gut flora, consider consuming probiotic-rich foods like yogurt (if tolerated well), or fermented foods like sauerkraut and kefir. Triphala, an Ayurvedic formulation, can also support digestion if taken in warm water.

Avoiding excessive table sugar and processed foods must be considered, as they can worsen inflammation. Remember, its important to continue working closely with your healthcare provider to manage your condition effectively; these remedies are supportive and not substitutes for medical treatment.

When dealing with chronic cough and lung issues, especially when you are already on long-term oxygen therapy, it’s essential to be cautious and prioritize safety. For such conditions, Ayurveda can offer supportive remedies, though they should not replace medical advice. Given you’re experiencing phlegm and breathlessness, here’s how you might alleviate some symptoms with some Siddha-Ayurvedic approaches:

First, let’s consider steam inhalation with tulsi (holy basil) leaves, which may aid in loosening phlegm. Boil a few leaves in water and inhale the steam twice a day. The antimicrobial and expectorant properties of tulsi can be beneficial here.

Additionally, incorporating warm turmeric milk into your evening routine could support your lung health. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties— mix a teaspoon of turmeric powder in a cup of warm milk, add a pinch of black pepper, and consume before bed.

To support your gut, consider incorporating triphala churna to aid digestion. Take about half to one teaspoon mixed in lukewarm water before bed. This may help balance any digestive issues due to repeated antibiotic use.

For your immediate symptoms, like cough when drinking water, it might help to sip warm water throughout the day rather than drinking larger amounts at once, as small sips can reduce the irritation to your lungs and help manage phlegm.

Since you are on oxygen and have a history of chest infections, it’s crucial to stay in communication with your pulmonologist or healthcare provider regularly. If you experience anything alarming like increased difficulty breathing or chest pain, seeking immediate medical attention would be important. Always ensure any home remedies complement your current treatment plan and don’t replace professional medical advice.
