Ayurvedic Perspective on Eating Sashimi and Raw Fish - #42348

Client_060ba7

Namaste. Thank you for all the information, widom. In Ayurveda my understanding is that vegetarian is more sattviv, less tamasic. But. I have a question about eating meat. I am studying a beginner course on Ayurveda. Actually Ayurveda for animals through Germany. It says that cooking meat, fish, makes the food more digestible and also feeding it warm increases digestibility. Yet in Japan Sashimi is very popular! The Japanese have an ancient culture and seem healthy, and wise. The Japanese eat a large variety of raw fish and meat. What is the Ayurvedic perspective on Sashimi? I have found eating red meat difficult to digest raw or cooked so I avoid it. Yet raw salmon digests very easily. I allow it warm up to room temperature over several hours and add spices. I eat it alone. Not with other foods. I feel energised, positive, and my digestion works well. It would be much appreciated, a professional opinion on this topic. Many thanks.

Doctors' responses

In Ayurveda, dietary choices are typically tailored depending on one’s prakriti (constitution), dosha imbalances, and the six tastes (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent). Generally, cooked foods are considered more satvic and easier for most to digest as cooking aids in strengthening agni, the digestive fire. However, the approach to food is also influenced by local traditions and individual constitution, as you observed with the Japanese practice of consuming sashimi.

Raw fish, such as salmon, can indeed be digestible for some individuals when balanced appropriately. The spicing of the fish can further enhance agni, helping in digestion, and the room temperature serving aligns with the avoidance of excessively cold foods, which may disturb vata and slow down digestion. However, it is crucial to pay attention to freshness and quality, as consuming raw fish carries risks of parasites or other infections, that is not the same in all regions.

Ayurveda emphasizes individualized diet plans based on one’s unique constitution and current health status. Since you noted that raw salmon feels easily digestible and energizing, it suggests that your current prakriti or doshic state might align well with its properties. However if you experience digestive issues often or have a sensitive constitution, it would be important to favor more sattvic, easily digestible foods and monitor your body’s response.

Bear in mind that the advice could vary depending on individual health factors, existing conditions, or imbalances. Therefore, it would be recommended to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner who can offer guidance taking your specific prakriti into account. Remember that what works can be different for everyone, and continual assessment of your health as you change your diet is critical.

Thank you very much!! 🙏 I appreciate your professional response greatly! I do intend to consult an ayurvedic doctor to get a full picture of my current constitutional state and advice on what I should do to ensure balance including Sattva and spiritual enlightmeng. Blessings to you!

From an Ayurvedic perspective, digestion is highly individual and the quality of your agni or digestive fire plays a crucial role in determining what foods are suitable for you. Generally, Ayurveda traditionally recommends against consuming raw foods, including fish, due to the difficulty many people experience in digesting them properly. The cooking process indeed helps to enhance digestibility as it begins to break down food, making nutrients more accessible for absorption. Cooking food also tends to pacify Vata and Kapha doshas, which can be aggravated by raw foods.

However, if you are finding raw salmon digestible and it supports your energy levels, then your agni might be strong enough to handle it. The way you allow it to warm to room temperature is beneficial, as cold foods can weaken agni, particularly for those with weaker digestive systems. Adding spices is another excellent approach as they can stimulate agni and aid digestion. Spices like ginger and black pepper, for instance, help to support a strong digestive process.

Each individual’s prakriti, or constitution, can influence how different foods affect them. Some may have a stronger agni and therefore can digest raw fish without problem, while others may struggle. If you feel positive effects and no adverse symptoms, it might be suitable for you personally. However, regular assessment and consciousness about any gradual changes in digestion or health symptoms are important. It may also be wise to limit raw fish consumption, given potential bacterial or parasitic risks.

Nonetheless, everyone’s health situation is unique, and what suits one person may not suit another. Monitoring how your body reacts over time and checking in with a healthcare professional regularly can help you maintain balance. If any digestive disturbance occurs, or if you notice any changes, revisiting your dietary choices based on those signs would be advisable.
