is beetroot heat for body - #43435

Mia

I am seriously confused about beetroot lately. I’ve always heard that beetroot is super healthy, but then I came across some talk about how it might cause heat in the body, and now I'm lost. A few weeks ago, I started adding beetroot to my smoothies and salads cuz I thought it would help with my energy. I often feel tired and sluggish, and honestly, I hoped this would be a quick fix. But then my friend mentioned that eating too much beetroot can create excess heat, which is weird cuz I also read that it’s cooling in some texts! My eating habits have changed quite a bit, and now I'm just trying to figure out what might be affecting my body. I’ve noticed some rashes popping up, especially after I eat more beetroot in a week. Is beetroot heat for body, or isn’t it? I don’t want to mess up my digestion. Like, should I be worried about this? I want to keep it in my meals but also don’t wanna trigger anything bad. Should I balance it with something cooling, or am I overthinking this? Help!

Beetroot can be a bit of a puzzle, I get it, especially when you’re navigating between traditional wisdom and modern takes. Traditionally, in Ayurvedic context, beetroot is considered slightly warming due to its natural sweetness and earthy qualities. It’s generally stimulating and can increase the pitta dosha slightly. Pitta is the fire element in our bodies and when enflamed leads to heat-related symptoms like skin rashes you’re experiencing.

However, beetroot is also hydrating and can support blood purification, which aligns with its beneficial properties for your energy levels and overall vitality. Adding it to smoothies and salads is a good move, considering its nutrient richness, but moderation is key. If you’re noticing rashes, this can indicate that your digestion is overloaded, or that there’s a mild imbalance due to increased heat.

To balance things out, include naturally cooling foods or drinks. These include cucumber, mint, coriander leaves, or cooling dairy like fresh milk or ghee in your meals. If you love using beetroot, consider roasting or steaming them lightly — cooking can sometimes lessen their heating effects.

Your concerns are valid, especially when it comes to pitta imbalance. Monitoring how your body reacts gives insight: are there patterns across different meals or food? Keep a note. Should you find the rashes concerning, consider reducing your beetroot intake to see if they ease up. If it does, have small portions and gradual introduction combined with cooling foods.

Ultimately, listen to your body signals. If symptoms persist or new ones arise, an in-depth consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner might be ideal. For dietary balance, variety helps maintain digestive balance without overwhelming fire, ensuring you gain beetroot’s benefits without discomfort.
