how much amla per day - #43464

Hannah

I am struggling to incorporate amla into my daily routine, and honestly, I’m not sure how much amla per day I should be consuming for the best results. I started taking amla powder about a month ago after reading so many good things about its health benefits, but I keep doubting if I am taking enough or even too much. I mix it into my smoothies, but I sometimes forget and then I feel like I’m not getting the full advantage of it. Last week, I tried to measure it out and ended up with just a teaspoon, but sometimes I think that’s not enough, right? I’ve heard that some people are taking a tablespoon daily, and I’m kinda worried I am missing out on those amazing benefits – espeshly for my hair and digestion. I have seen some improvement, but I want to know how much amla per day is actually good to feel the full effect, like better skin or more energy. Do you think it’s better to take it daily or are there breaks needed? Any advice would be super appreciated! If you guys have any personal experiences about how much amla per day you’ve taken, that would help too!

Doctors' responses

When integrating amla into your daily routine, determining the right amount is as important as consistency. Your current approach of using amla powder mixed in smoothies is a fantastic method to incorporate it easily into your diet. For someone beginning with amla, starting with half a teaspoon and gradually increasing to one teaspoon per day is quite typical and safe.

A tablespoon (about 10-15 grams) per day of amla powder is often cited in many sources, aligning with traditional Ayurvedic recommendations. This dosage is generally well-tolerated, but it’s essential to listen to your body, as individual needs can vary. Since you mentioned using it primarily for hair, skin, and digestion, continue your current routine and notice how your body responds before increasing the intake.

Daily usage of amla does tend to bring a more consistent impact without needing breaks. Yet, if you’re someone who feels their agni (digestive fire) is quite variable or you notice any digestive discomfort, it might be beneficial to allow short breaks to see if that’s more harmonious for you.

Considering its high vitamin C content and adaptability to various forms - like fresh fruit, powder, or juice - there’s potential for varied consumption. If you experience any adverse reactions, like digestive upset or changes in stool consistency, ease back to a lesser amount or consider taking it with warm water to balance your digestive fire (agni).

Remember, individual constitution (prakriti), current diet, and lifestyle, as well as prevalent dosha imbalances, all affect how much amla you should take. If you see improvements already, that’s a good indication you’re on the right path. If amplifying the benefits is your goal, gently increase dosage while staying mindful of your well-being.
