which milk powder is good for health - #44579

Bella

I am really confused about which milk powder is good for health. Recently, I started a new diet and was looking for ways to add some nutrients without the hassle of cooking or making smoothies. My friend suggested milk powder, but now I’m overwhelmed by all the options out there! I tried one brand that was supposed to be full of vitamins, but honestly, it tasted kind of weird and left me feeling bloated. I even checked the label, and there were some ingredients that I couldn't pronounce. A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that I was feeling more sluggish than usually, and I thought it might be related to my diet since I’m cutting out some foods. Could the milk powder I was using actually be part of the problem? My nutritionist mentioned something about how dairy can affect people differently, but I didn't think it would be that serious. Also, is there a difference between full-fat and skim milk powder in terms of health benefits? Wondering if anyone has experience with this. Really want to find which milk powder is good for health that won’t upset my stomach or make me feel groggy. Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Choosing the right milk powder can indeed be challenging, especially when trying to align it with your health goals. In Ayurveda, understanding your body type, or prakriti, and how foods interact with it, is crucial. If you’re feeling bloated or sluggish, it might be related to how your body processes the milk powder.

Firstly, consider opting for organic, minimally processed milk powders. These are often free from additives and preservatives, which can be harsh on some digestive systems. The unfamiliar ingredients you encountered might be such additives, potentially causing your bloating and sluggishness.

Regarding full-fat versus skim milk powder, from an ayurvedic perspective, full-fat milk is usually preferred due to its nourishing and grounding properties. It’s often considered sattvic, promoting energy and balance. However, for some, especially those with kapha dominance, it might contribute to heaviness or sluggishness. In such cases, skim milk could be a better alternative, with less fat content it may be easier to digest and less likely to disrupt your agni, or digestive fire.

Considering you’re on a new diet, your dietary cutbacks might also be affecting your energy levels. If dairy is new for you in this form, try introducing it gradually and monitor your body’s responses. If bloating persists, explore herbal aids like ginger or cumin taken with milk, which can help in digestion.

Additionally, exploring alternative options like almond or coconut milk powders may also be worth considering, especially if dairy tends to unsettle your system. These options are generally considered lighter, making them a good fit for those with vata or pitta imbalances.

Ultimately, it might be beneficial to discuss these observations with both your nutritionist and perhaps an Ayurvedic practitioner, who can provide a more personalized recommendation based on your unique constitution and health goals. Remember to listen to your body, noting what works well and what doesn’t, as such awareness is key in navigating dietary changes.
