how to consume amla - #44733

Lucy

I am kinda confused about how to consume amla for the best results. Last week, my friend told me about this amazing fruit and all the benefits it has but now I'm just overwhelmed. I don't know if I should eat it raw, juice it, or maybe even make some kind of chutney. Somebody told me amla powder is good too, but how to consume amla like that? I tried eating a slice of it raw the other day, and wow, it was super sour! I ended up making a face and my kids just laughed at me. 😅 I also read somewhere that cooking it might take away its nutrients, which made me worry like, am I even doing this right? I’ve heard great things about amla for digestion and boosting immunity, especially during the fall when colds are everywhere. I just want to make sure I'm getting all the benefits possible. Can anyone share some easy hacks or recipes on how to consume amla regularly? And if you have any thoughts on combining it with other things, that would be awesome too! I'm really trying to make this part of our daily routine, so any tips would be super helpful. Thanks a ton!!!

Doctors' responses

Amla, or Indian gooseberry, indeed holds a multitude of health benefits recognized in Ayurveda. Its high vitamin C content and rejuvenating properties make it a valuable component for maintaining health, especially for boosting immunity and aiding digestion. Eating it raw can be a bit challenging due to its intense sour taste, but there are many ways to incorporate it into your diet without sacrificing taste or nutrient integrity.

Consuming Amla Raw or Whole: If you can handle the tartness, eating a small piece of raw amla once daily can be beneficial. You might sprinkle a little rock salt over it to balance the sourness and enhance taste.

Amla Juice: Drinking fresh amla juice is a popular method. Juice 2-3 amla fruits, add water, and a dash of honey for sweetness, but drink it on an empty stomach in mornings for best results. This method helps retain most of the vitamin C and antioxidants.

Amla Powder: For those who prefer convenience, amla powder can be quite effective. Mix 1-2 teaspoons of amla powder in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it either in the morning or before meals. This powder can also be added to smoothies or sprinkled on salads for added vitamins.

Amla Chutney or Murabba: Amla chutney is a delicious way to include this ingredient in meals. Blend amla with mint, coriander, and green chilies. For a sweeter option, amla murabba (cooked amla in a sweet syrup) is another traditional preparation that preserves its nutrients.

Cooking Amla: While some methods of cooking amla, like deep frying can reduce nutrients, steaming or lightly sautéing can preserve much of its goodness. Consider adding sliced amla to soups or stews at the end of cooking.

Amal in combination with other herbs: Combining amla with ginger or tulsi can even further enhance its immune-boosting properties. Tulsi and ginger together with amla juice makes a powerful blend, especially beneficial during colder seasons.

Avoid excess consumption and listen to your body’s response, as too much can aggravate Vata dosha due to its sour taste. Always ensure it’s well-balanced with your dietary needs and personal constitution. If any discomfort persists, consulting an Ayurveda practitioner would be prudent to tailor the usage to your specific dosha type and lifestyle.
