Growth in height typically occurs until the completion of puberty, which for most males is around 18-21 years of age. After this age, the growth plates in the bones generally fuse, significantly limiting potential for height increase. However, maintaining optimal health and lifestyle can support the body’s structural and functional integrity.
From a Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, we can focus on improving overall bone health and nourishment of the asthi dhatu (bone tissue) as well as promoting a balanced state of doshas. Eating a diet rich in calcium and magnesium, like leafy greens, sesame seeds, and milk, may support bone health. Foods that enhance digestion and metabolism, such as ginger and cumin, can also be helpful since a strong agni (digestive fire) is crucial for nutrient absorption.
Regular physical activity, especially exercises involving stretching, yoga postures like tadasana (mountain pose) could promote better posture and flexibility, possibly enhancing perceived height. Pranayama (breathing exercises) can support overall physiological function and well-being.
While Ayurvedic rasayanas (rejuvenative formulations) such as ashwagandha and shatavari are traditionally suggested to support vitality and nourishment, their effectiveness on increasing height at this stage could be limited.
Before pursuing any herbal formulations, consider consulting a qualified practitioner to ensure safety and appropriateness for your son’s constitution. If there’s persistent concern over his height affecting his wellbeing, addressing emotional and psychological wellness is equally significant, possibly seeking counsel where needed for building confidence and perspective.
