Height increase, especially after the age of 23, can be challenging due to the closure of epiphyseal growth plates. Typically, males experience height growth until around 18-21 years of age, with variations due to genetics and lifestyle factors. By 23, these growth plates in the long bones usually fuse, halting significant growth. However, there are several approaches in Ayurveda that may help improve posture and overall health, which could contribute to appearance of height.
1. Dietary Adjustments: Protein-rich foods such as legumes, nuts, seeds, and dairy can be beneficial. A balanced intake of vitamins and minerals like calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D is essenstial for bone health. Ensure that he includes a variety of colorful fruits and vegetable to get adequate nutrition.
2. Herbal Supplements: Ayurveda suggests herbs such as Ashwagandha and Shatavari for boosting health. Ashwagandha can particularly aid in improving strength and vitality. A recommended dose is 1-2 teaspoons of Ashwagandha powder mixed with warm milk, taken before bedtime. However, always consult a professional before starting any herbal supplement, especially if allergies are a concern.
3. Yoga and Exercise: Regular practice of yoga can help improve posture and flexibility. Certain asanas like Tadasana (Mountain Pose), Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), and Chakrasana (Wheel Pose) can temporarily stretch the spine, making one appear taller. Practicing these daily could enhance muscular tonus and body alignment, which may improve stature over time.
4. Lifestyle Habits: Encourage good sleeping patterns, as growth hormone secretion is affected by rest. Sleeping on the back without a pillow can support spinal alignment. Adequate hydration is crucial, so ensure he drinks plenty of water daily.
While these methods may support overall vitality, they are unlikely to significantly change height at this age. It’s important to manage expectations and focus on holistic health and self-acceptance.
Growth in height typically occurs until the completion of puberty, which for most males is around 18-21 years of age. After this age, the growth plates in the bones generally fuse, significantly limiting potential for height increase. However, maintaining optimal health and lifestyle can support the body’s structural and functional integrity.
From a Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, we can focus on improving overall bone health and nourishment of the asthi dhatu (bone tissue) as well as promoting a balanced state of doshas. Eating a diet rich in calcium and magnesium, like leafy greens, sesame seeds, and milk, may support bone health. Foods that enhance digestion and metabolism, such as ginger and cumin, can also be helpful since a strong agni (digestive fire) is crucial for nutrient absorption.
Regular physical activity, especially exercises involving stretching, yoga postures like tadasana (mountain pose) could promote better posture and flexibility, possibly enhancing perceived height. Pranayama (breathing exercises) can support overall physiological function and well-being.
While Ayurvedic rasayanas (rejuvenative formulations) such as ashwagandha and shatavari are traditionally suggested to support vitality and nourishment, their effectiveness on increasing height at this stage could be limited.
Before pursuing any herbal formulations, consider consulting a qualified practitioner to ensure safety and appropriateness for your son’s constitution. If there’s persistent concern over his height affecting his wellbeing, addressing emotional and psychological wellness is equally significant, possibly seeking counsel where needed for building confidence and perspective.
