Irregular periods at your age could be influenced by several factors. Firstly, since you are 44, perimenopause could be playing a role in altering your menstrual cycle. This is a transitional phase before menopause where hormonal changes become noticeable and irregularities such as erratic period flow, or timing may occur.
Your thyroid levels, indicated by a TSH of 5.8, suggest suboptimal thyroid function, even while on medication. Thyroid health is intricately connected with menstrual cycles, as it regulates hormones that influence fertility and cycle regularity. It may be beneficial to revisit your thyroid management with a healthcare provider to consider dosage adjustment or additional investigation into overall thyroid function.
The presence of fibroids can also contribute to changes in your period, potentially causing heavier, longer, or more frequent bleeding. Small fibroids, though usually less significant, can still disturb the normal uterine environment.
In Ayurveda, irregular periods often relate to imbalance in Vata dosha. Focus on a Vata-pacifying routine, which includes maintaining a regular daily schedule and ensuring sufficient hydration by siping warm water throughout the day. Incorporate easily digestible, cooked foods warm in quality, like soups and stews, to enhance digestive fire (Agni). Ensure your diet is rich in iron to support healthy blood-building and consider herbs such as Shatavari, which supports hormonal balance.
It’s crucial to evaluate lifestyle factors like stress, diet, and exercise — each can significantly influence menstrual health. Regular gentle exercise such as yoga can help maintain balance, both physically and mentally. Finally, while it may not replace modern medicine, consult a qualified Ayurvedic Practitioner to detail your constitution (Prakriti) and personalize these recommendations further, ensuring safe integration with your existing regimen.
Irregular periods at the age of 44 can often be attributed to perimenopause, a natural transition phase before menopause that can cause hormonal fluctuations impacting your menstrual cycle. Given your TSH level is 5.8, indicating hypothyroidism, this can also contribute to menstrual irregularities. Thyroid disorders are known to affect menstrual cycles, sometimes causing heavier, lighter, or more irregular menstruation.
The small fibroids you mentioned may also play a role, as they can cause changes in menstrual bleeding though usually on heavier side. Fibroids are benign growths that can develop within the uterus and vary in impact depending on their size and location.
From a Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, irregular periods might be linked to an imbalance in vata dosha, which governs movement and flow in the body, including the menstrual cycle. To address these issues, Ayurvedic practices focus on balancing the doshas, improving agni (digestive fire), and supporting the reproductive tissues (asukla dhatu).
For managing vata imbalance, consider incorporating warm, cooked foods into your diet, favoring sweet, sour, and salty tastes. Foods like rice, ghee, cooked fruits, and almonds can be beneficial. Regular mealtimes and avoiding cold or raw foods helps stabilize vata. Triphala choorna, taken with warm water before bed, can support digestion and elimination.
Establishing a routine that incorporates consistent sleep and stress-reducing activities like meditation can help balance the hormones. If you haven’t already, consulting a healthcare provider for your fibroids and thyroid condition is essential to ensure comprehensive care.
