Hypertension, especially in seniors, requires careful management, both through conventional medicine and supportive practices. In Ayurveda, the root cause of hypertension often relates to imbalances in the Vata and Pitta doshas. To address this, a few natural remedies and lifestyle adjustments might be beneficial alongside your current medication.
First, consider incorporating Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna). This herb is revered in Ayurvedic medicine for heart health. You can prepare an Arjuna tea by boiling 1 teaspoon of Arjuna bark powder in a cup of water for 10 minutes. Strain, and drink this once a day. The calming effects of Arjuna help maintain stable blood pressure levels.
Next, your diet plays a crucial role in managing hypertension. Favor Vata and Pitta pacifying foods. Include warm, cooked meals with moderate amounts of healthy fats like ghee or sesame oil. Avoid excessively spicy or salty foods as they may aggravate Pitta. Fresh fruits and vegetables, especially those high in potassium such as bananas and sweet potatoes, can be very supportive.
Another practice helpful for hypertension is Pranayama, particularly the Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing). Perform this daily for 5-10 minutes in a calm environment, preferably morning or evening, to balance Vata and reduce stress.
Additionally, establishing a regular routine, including a consistent sleep pattern and balanced activity levels, helps maintain dosha harmony. Gentle physical activities like walking or yoga can promote circulation without exerting too much strain on the heart.
Since you’re on medication already, ensure any Ayurvedic remedy does not interfere with your drugs. It’s essential to approach these remedies with caution and consult your healthcare provider, especially considering you’ve faced adverse reactions previously. If you experience any new symptoms or your condition worsens, seek immediate medical attention. Managing stress through meditation or spending time in nature can also greatly support your overall well-being.
