Doctors’ responses

In Ayurveda, long-term insomnia is often due to an imbalance in Vata dosha, which controls movement and the nervous system. When Vata is out of balance, the mind stays restless, making it hard to relax and fall asleep. Here are three practical steps to help you calm Vata and improve your sleep: 1. Daily Oil Massage (Abhyanga): Before bed, gently massage your feet and scalp with warm sesame oil. This grounds Vata and relaxes the nervous system, helping you drift into sleep naturally. Do it for 5–10 minutes, then wipe off any excess oil. 2. Warm Milk with Nutmeg: Before bed, drink a cup of warm milk with a pinch of nutmeg. Nutmeg has calming properties in Ayurveda, helping to soothe the mind and encourage sleep. This drink creates a feeling of comfort, grounding Vata. 3. Fixed Bedtime Routine: Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Routine is essential to calm Vata. By following a fixed bedtime, you train your body and mind to settle down at the same time, which helps reduce restlessness.

Dear Rajesh, Sleeplessness is a complicated disorder. Exactly when did it start ? Do you find a problem in getting sleep or continuing good sleep? Accordingly the treatment varies. Ayurveda offers several approaches to treat insomnia by balancing the doshas and promoting relaxation. Here are some key strategies: Herbs: Ashwagandha: Reduces stress and promotes restful sleep. Brahmi: Calms the mind and enhances sleep quality. Jatamansi: Known for its calming effects on the nervous system. Dietary Recommendations: Eat warm, light dinners; avoid heavy and spicy foods before bedtime. Include calming foods like warm milk with jayphal powder or chamomile tea before food. Daily Routine (Dinacharya): Establish a consistent sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time. Incorporate relaxation practices, such as gentle yoga or meditation, in the evening. Practice mindfulness with journaling everyday and indulging in music or art therapy before sleeping. Massage and Oils: Abhyanga (oil massage) with calming oils like sesame or coconut can help soothe the nervous system. Warm oil applied to the scalp (shirodhara) may also promote relaxation. Environmental Considerations: Create a calming bedtime environment; dim lights and reduce noise. Ensure your sleeping area is comfortable and conducive to rest. Consult me or any Ayurvedic practitioner for personalised recommendations tailored to your specific dosha and condition.
