HELLO, Since you’re 18 and have been on Ayurvedic mediicne for 2.5 years for vitiligo, and now suddenly developed swelling with severe pain in hands and legs, this needs careful attention Sudden swelling with intense pain (to the point you can’t move) is NOT typical of vitiligo itself. we must consider other causes FIRST-IMPORTANT SAFETY ADVICE Even though symptoms are < 1 week and occur during certain activities, sudden severe swelling + pain could indicate -drug reaction -inflammatory arthritis -uric acid issue -kidney related fluid retention -autoimmune joint disease -rarely, blood clot(if one sided swelling) Please consult a physician urgently and get basic tests done before continuing any medicines Do not ignore this ABBOUT VITILIGO Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition where melanocytes are destroyed. sometimes people with vitiligo can develop. -autoimmune thyroid disease -rheumatoid arthritis -lupus -psoriasis So joint pain and swelling must be evaluated medically first POSSIBLE ISSUE WITH LONG TERM AYURVEDIC MEDICINES Some classical Ayurvedic formulations may contain -heavy metals if not properly purified -long term immune modulating herbs -steroid adulterated products (in rare non certified preparations) After 2.5 years, your body may be reacting Please tell your doctor exactly which medicines are you taking In Ayurveda, vitiligo is called-> shwitra Swelling + pain indicates -vata aggravation -possible ama (toxic metabolic accumulation -or Vata rakta type inflammatory disorder STEP 3= Ayurvedic management If no serious condition is found, and it is vata-ama type swelling INTERNAL MANAGEMENT 1) GUDUCHI GHAN VATI= 2 tabs twice daily after meals =anti inflammatory, and immune balancing 2) MAHAYOGARAJ GUGGULU= 1 tab twice daily after meals =for vata joint pain 3) DASHMOOLA KASAHYA = 20 ml + equal water twice daily before meals =reduces inflammation and swelling 4) CASTOR OIL= 5 ml with warm milk at night (if no loose motion tendency) EXTERNAL TREATMENT -Warm sesame oil massage -followed by mild fomentation (warm towel) AVOID -cold exposure -sour, fermented foods -excess curd -packaged food DIET -warm, light food -mong dal -old rice -steamed vegetables -turmeric + black pepper in food AVOID -curd at night -cold drinks -excess tomatoes -deep fried food -non veg temporarily MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION Are both hands and legs swollen equally? Is swelling worse In morning ? Any family history of arthritis? Vitiligo treatment should not cause severe disabling joint pain DO FOLLOW HOPE THIS MIGHT BE HELPFUL THANK YOU DR. MAITRI ACHARYA

Hello Thanks for explaining what’s going on. It sounds like a tough situation, especially since you’ve been getting vitiligo treatment for a while. But dont worry we are here to help you out 😊 AYURVEDIC UNDERSTANDING So, you’re 18 and have been taking Ayurvedic stuff for vitiligo (Shwitra) for about two and a half years. Out of nowhere, you’ve got: – Swollen hands and legs – Crazy pain that makes it hard to move In Ayurveda, vitiligo gets treated with stuff that cleans you out and purifies your blood. Usually, these medicines are: – Hot – Strong – Blood cleansers – Stuff that cuts down Kapha-meda When you take these for a long time without breaks or check-ups, it can cause: – Vata going wild (that’s the pain and stiffness) – Pitta-Rakta getting irritated (hello, swelling and burning) – Ama floating around in your joints (basically toxic junk causing pain and swelling) All this together can make your joints swell up suddenly and hurt a lot. Heads up! This isn’t a normal thing. If you get this kind of sudden pain and swelling after being on meds for a long time, it means: – Your body’s had enough of the medicines – You might be having a bad reaction to the drugs – Or your autoimmune thing is flaring up Vitiligo is an autoimmune thing itself. Strong medicines can set off arthritis-like stuff. What You Need to Do ASAP Seriously, don’t ignore this. Get these blood tests done: – CBC – ESR – CRP – RA factor – Anti-CCP – Serum uric acid – Check your liver and kidneys These will show if there’s: – Swelling – Autoimmune reaction – Drug issues AYURVEDIC PLAN OF TREATMENT 1. STOP taking all vitiligo medicines for now Until the pain and swelling calm down. 2. To ease the pain and swelling: 1Dashmoolaristha (10–15 ml + same amount of warm water) Twice a day after food 2.Rasnasaptak Kwath (10 ml twice a day) 3 Gandharva Haritaki (small amount- ½ tsp with water) At night with warm water – if you’re constipated EXTERNAL CARE Apply kottamchukkadi taila and do light massage Two times a day DIET. PLAN Stay away from: – Sour foods (like curd, lemon, vinegar) – Fried and baked stuff – Fermented foods – Junk and packaged food – Cold drinks, ice cream Eat: – Warm, fresh food – Moong dal, rice, veggies – A bit of ghee – Turmeric in your food No gym, running, or hard stuff until the pain chills out. What About the Vitiligo? Once the pain and swelling are gone and your blood tests look normal, we need to restart the vitiligo treatment in a safer, gentler way that cleans you out. No more constant strong meds. Your body’s trying to tell you: “I need a break and a detox from these strong medicines.” Don’t freak out – it can get better if we handle it right now. Give me an update with your blood test results, and I will give you guidance. Warm Regards Dr Snehal Vidhate
