Namaste, Some Ayurvedic medicines, especially certain classical formulations, may contain purified minerals or metals like mercury, lead, or arsenic. In Ayurveda, these substances are used only after a special purification and processing method called Shodhana and Marana, which is intended to make them safe and suitable for therapeutic use. Simple points to understand: Many Ayurvedic medicines such as churna (powders) and herbal tablets are purely plant-based and do not contain heavy metals. Mineral or metal-based formulations (called Rasa medicines) are used in very small, carefully prepared doses and traditionally only under medical supervision. Safety mainly depends on quality, proper purification, correct dosage, and guidance from a qualified Ayurvedic doctor. It is important to use medicines from reputable manufacturers that follow proper quality standards. If medicines are taken without guidance or from unreliable sources, there may be safety concerns. Ayurvedic herbal formulations commonly used that are purely plant-based include: Triphala Churna – traditionally used to support digestion and detox balance. Ashwagandha – commonly used to support strength and stress balance. Consult me for more advice and suggestions on the above medicines.

–Some Ayurvedic medicines are safe, especially herbal-only ones, but products containing mercury, lead, or arsenic can be harmful if not properly prepared. Always use medicines from trusted, certified brands and under a doctor’s supervision. If you take them regularly, it’s a good idea to check liver, kidney, and blood tests to be safe

Do not worry. These metals have to undergo large processing (shodhan kriya) before they are used. These proceses make the metals into nano particles. NANO PARTICLES HAVE PROPERTIES COMPLETELY DIFFRENT TO THE MAIN ATOM. So be rest assured.

Properly prepared & purified bhasmas from reputed manufacturers are considered safe in Ayurvedic tradition when taken in prescribed low doses for limited time under supervision. Modern studies & government testing show that many good brands comply with AYUSH limits ✓Poor quality / adulterated / unpurified products has high heavy metal levels causing liver/kidney damage, neurological issues, chronic toxicity Self-medication, long-term use, high doses can be dangerous Many online/herbal sellers sell low-quality or fake bhasmas ✓Get tested = if taking any rasa medicine >1 month, check blood heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic) + LFT + RFT once in 6 months For simple churnas/tablets = heavy metals are usually negligible or absent and very safe Regards Dr Gursimran Jeet Singh MD Panchakarma

Why Heavy Metals Appear in Ayurveda---- - Rasa Shastra tradition: Certain Ayurvedic formulations intentionally use metals/minerals (e.g., mercury/Parada, lead/Naga, arsenic/Haritala) after purification (Shodhana) and calcination (Marana) to make Bhasma (ash-like preparations). - Therapeutic rationale: These are believed to enhance potency, stability, and targeted action when properly processed. Safety Evidence— - Clinical safety: Standardized, properly prepared formulations have shown safe use in clinical studies.
