Can Ayurveda help with my son's refractory childhood absence epilepsy while on lamotrigine and valproate? - #53921

My son (11 years old) has a refractory childhood absence epilepsie and is on lamotrigine and valproat since 9 months. He has tried several western medication (e.g. Ethosuximide) for years but nothing but lamotrigine showed some improvements. In the EEG you still can see 1 spike per minute and we are wondering if Ayurveda, like Brahmi vati gold, can supplement and help in this process. We are also cautious as we read that some Ayurveda plants can lower the medication level in the liver and, thus, trigger more seizures. What could you recommend? My son has a high vata type (tall, energetic, emotions on both ends, always wants to run around without socks cause he feels heat all the time, wants to stay at home and not go out and has a low appetite level). I've tried it myself as I have also an idiopathic generalized epilepsy, but were on good mecation with Briviact and Lamotrigine. After I took brahmi and jatamansi tea together with a brahmi herb paste and some tonic, I had a status epilepticus 4 weeks later. However I felt the impact it had on my brain - I was more focused. So I could see the benefit of Ayurveda, but it has to be the right herb with doses that can be used together with the western medicine. Your recommendations would be highly appreciated.

I’m going to be very direct because this is a high-risk situation. Your child has refractory childhood absence epilepsy and is already on Lamotrigine + Valproate. These are core, evidence-based medicines. Any add-on must be chosen very cautiously, because even small changes in drug levels can increase seizures. Also, your own experience of status epilepticus after Brahmi + Jatamansi is a strong warning sign that unsupervised herbal combinations can destabilize seizure control. Key principle before Ayurveda Do not stop or reduce current medicines Avoid herbs that induce liver enzymes or unpredictably alter drug levels Introduce only one thing at a time Monitor EEG and seizure frequency closely Important caution about “Brahmi Vati Gold” Avoid giving Brahmi Vati (Gold) in your child. Reason Contains Swarna bhasma and multiple minerals Variable potency and safety in children Can interact unpredictably with anti-epileptic drugs Not recommended in pediatric refractory epilepsy without strict supervision. Safer Ayurvedic approach for your child Instead of heavy formulations, use mild, single herbs + supportive therapy Brahmi (safe base option) Use plain Bacopa monnieri Dose: Syrup or extract equivalent to 125 mg to 250 mg twice daily after food Benefits Improves attention and cognition Mild neuroprotective effect Generally safe with lamotrigine and valproate Start low and increase slowly over 2 weeks. Shankhpushpi (good add-on) Use Convolvulus pluricaulis Dose: Syrup 5 ml twice daily after food Benefits: Calms hyperactivity Supports memory and sleep Medhya Ghrita (important for Vata) Use Brahmi Ghrita Dose: 1 quarter teaspoon in warm milk at night Benefits: Stabilizes nervous system Helpful in high Vata children Avoid these in your case Because of seizure risk or drug interaction Nardostachys jatamansi in combination or high dose Ashwagandha in high doses Complex polyherbal formulations Any metal or bhasma preparations Diet and lifestyle for “high Vata child” Your description fits Vata aggravation. This directly affects seizure threshold. Diet Warm, soft, slightly oily foods Ghee daily in small quantity Avoid fasting or skipping meals Avoid packaged food and excess sugar Routine Fixed sleep time No screen exposure before sleep Gentle oil massage with sesame oil 3 to 4 times per week Very important monitoring After starting any herb Watch for increased staring spells Irritability or sleep changes Any increase in EEG spikes If anything worsens, stop immediately.

This is a high-risk, medication-sensitive condition, so the approach must be very cautious and coordinated with your neurologist. First — important clarity Ayurveda can support nervous system stability and reduce triggers, but it cannot replace anti-epileptic drugs in refractory epilepsy. Also, your personal history of status epilepticus after combining herbs strongly suggests possible interaction or overstimulation, so we must be conservative. About Brahmi / herbal use Brahmi can help cognition and calmness, but: It may alter neurotransmitter activity Some herbs can affect liver metabolism, indirectly influencing lamotrigine/valproate levels In sensitive patients, even “medhya” herbs can destabilize seizure threshold 👉 So avoid self-starting combinations like Brahmi + Jatamansi + multiple formulations Safer Ayurvedic support (mild, non-interfering) Instead of strong formulations like Brahmi vati gold, start with very gentle support only if neurologist agrees: Brahmi (single herb, low dose) – e.g. 125 mg once daily after food Or Brahmi ghrita (very small dose) – ¼ teaspoon with warm milk in daytime ➡️ Start one thing only, not multiple together ➡️ Observe for 2–3 weeks before any change Focus more on non-drug support (very important in your son) This will give safer benefit than aggressive herbal use: Routine & Vata calming Fixed sleep–wake timing (very important) Avoid overstimulation (screens, flashing lights, irregular schedule) Diet Warm, nourishing, easy-to-digest food Add ghee (supports nervous system) Avoid long gaps in meals (low appetite → worsens vata instability) Nervous system calming Gentle head oiling (warm sesame oil, daytime) Foot massage at night Simple breathing (age-appropriate, no force) What to AVOID Polyherbal formulations (Brahmi vati gold, multiple rasayanas) initially High doses of medhya herbs Frequent changes in herbs Empty stomach dosing Monitoring (very important) Track seizure frequency carefully If any increase in spikes/seizures → stop herb immediately Periodic drug level monitoring (especially valproate) Practical summary Yes, Ayurveda can support, but in your son’s case: Use minimal, single, low-dose intervention Prioritize routine, diet, nervous system stability Always coordinate with neurologist Given your personal adverse experience, your caution is absolutely valid — and necessary. Regards, Dr Raghuveer (Ayurvedacharya) Take care and feel free to contact me anytime for any of your health needs.

🌱Brahmi Shankhapushpi Jatamansi Beneficial 1. Brahmi Ghritam - 1/4 tspn at night 2. Saraswatarishtam - 10 ml - 0 - 10ml a/f 3. Panchakarma (if suitable for the child): Mild therapies like: Shirodhara Shiroabhyanga (head massage) Nasya (nasal drops) beneficial. These are used to calm the nervous system. 3. Diet & Lifestyle: Light, easily digestible food 🌸Avoid Excess sour, fermented, or very spicy food 🌱Regular sleep is important 4. Mind-Calming Practices: 🌱Gentle yoga Breathing exercises (Pranayama) Relaxation techniques 🌱Caution : Do not stop or reduce Lamotrigine or Valproate without a neurologist’s advice.

The history of your child pointing towards Vataja Apasmara. So our goal is to stabilize the Majja Dhatu (nervous system) and balance Udana and Prana Vayu without interfering with the metabolism of Lamotrigine or Valproate. 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 Do not stop or reduce modern AEDs (Lamotrigine/Valproate). 👇👇👇👇👇 Ayurvedic medicines must be administered at least 2 hours apart from western medications to prevent absorption interference in the gut. 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 Brahmi Vati Gold contains heavy metals (Suwarna/Gold); it should only be used under strict supervision Or for a limited duration. 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 As a parent you are concerned regarding the herb drug interaction so our approach must be Priotize the safety of the child and neuro protection 👇👇👇👇👇👇 1) Kalyanka gritam - 5 ml with warm water or milk empty stomach in morning 2) saraswatarishtam- 10 ml with equal water after lunch 3) manasamitra vatakam- 1 tablet before bed with milk 4) ksheerabala thailam101 - 2 drops each nostril morning empty stomach 👇👇👇👇👇👇 Include cow ghee in his daily diet add old rise Drink 30 ml juice of Ash guard in morning if he can tolerate Avoid caffein aur high sugar processed food Red Chillies excessive garlic fermented food curd or yoghurt especially at night Since your child feels heat and is energetic applied daily application of dhanvantaram Tailam on head and soles of feet before bath Insurance strict 9:00 p.m. bedtime limit screen time before Ask him to practice gentle bhramari Pranayam for 5 minutes 👇👇👇👇👇👇 Since you mentioned a past status about epilepticus after taking Brahmi or Jatamansi it points towards that you child may be a slow metaboliser or the herb significantly induce or inhibit liver enzymes 👇👇 so firstly you start with only Kalyanka ghritam for the first 7 days to check the tolerance before adding another formulation 👇👇👇 Please closely monitor seizure frequency during the transition phase
