Hi! I’m an assistant to the Ask Ayurveda doctors. I’ve carefully reviewed your question.

I will explain your symptoms through the Ayurvedic perspective so you understand what is happening in your body as a whole.

Your symptoms of advancing neuropathy, such as numbness in the toes and squeezing sensations in the feet, can be understood through the lens of Vata imbalance in Ayurveda. Vata dosha is responsible for movement and nerve impulses in the body. When Vata is aggravated, it can lead to symptoms like numbness, tingling, and irregular sensations, which you are experiencing.

The squeezing sensation, akin to wearing compression socks, suggests a Vata-induced constriction or dryness affecting the nerve channels. This can be compounded by the effects of chemotherapy, which is known to increase Vata due to its drying and depleting nature, as well as diabetes, which can disturb both Vata and Kapha doshas, leading to nerve damage.

Ayurveda views your condition as a systemic imbalance rather than isolated symptoms. The combination of diabetes and chemotherapy likely weakened your agni (digestive fire), allowing ama (toxins) to accumulate, which further disrupts nerve function and circulation.

To give doctors a precise and effective treatment plan, your answers to the questions below are essential. Without this information, the recommendations will be more general and less accurate.

Please answer each question as clearly as possible.

1. How long have you been experiencing the neuropathy symptoms, and have they been constant or do they fluctuate? 2. How would you rate the intensity of the squeezing sensation in your feet? Is it mild, moderate, severe, or very severe? 3. Do you notice any additional symptoms such as tingling, burning, or muscle weakness along with the numbness? 4. When do these sensations typically occur? During the day, at night, or after physical activity? 5. How is your current blood sugar control? Is it well-controlled, occasionally high, frequently fluctuating, or not controlled? 6. Have you made any significant lifestyle changes since your chemotherapy treatment? 7. How would you describe your overall energy levels during the day? High, moderate, low, or very low?

Your detailed responses will help in tailoring a more specific Ayurvedic approach to manage your symptoms effectively.

What you’re describing strongly suggests chronic peripheral neuropathy, and in your case it is very likely a combined effect of Diabetes Mellitus and chemotherapy-induced nerve damage (Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy). The “compression stocking–like squeezing,” numb toes, and burning sensations are classic signs of progressive nerve involvement. Since your blood sugar is well-controlled and symptoms are persisting beyond 6 months, this is not something that will reverse quickly with medicines alone—it needs a multi-dimensional approach. Understanding Your Condition (Simple View) Diabetes damages small blood vessels → reduces nerve nourishment Chemotherapy (for Hodgkin lymphoma) directly injures nerve fibers Over time → nerve insulation (myelin) + signaling get impaired That’s why you feel: Numbness Burning/pain Tight squeezing sensation Important Reality Check If left unmanaged, neuropathy can: Progress upward (feet → legs → hands) Lead to balance issues or falls Increase risk of unnoticed injuries So yes—this condition needs active treatment, not just symptom control. Ayurvedic Perspective This condition correlates with “Vata Vyadhi”, especially: Dhatukshaya (tissue depletion) after chemotherapy Vata aggravation in nerves (Majja + Snayu dushti) Why Medicines Alone Are NOT Enough Oral medicines help, but they: Work slowly Cannot deeply nourish damaged nerves alone That’s why Panchakarma + Rasayana (rejuvenation) is crucial in your case. Recommended Ayurvedic Management (After Proper Consultation) 1. Panchakarma (Core Treatment) Must be done under supervision: Abhyanga (medicated oil massage) → Improves circulation, reduces stiffness & squeezing feeling Swedana (sudation therapy) → Relieves heaviness, improves nerve conductivity Basti (medicated enema – most important) → Main treatment for Vata disorders → Helps in nerve regeneration and systemic correction Shirodhara (if stress/sleep issues present) → Calms nervous system 2. Internal Medicines (Doctor-guided) After assessment, typically includes: Maharasnadi kashaya 20 ml twice Ksheer bala 101 1 bd Ekangveer tab 2 bd Rasayana drugs for regeneration Formulations for Vata pacification (Exact medicines depend on your prakriti, strength, and ongoing allopathic meds—so must be personalized.) 3. Diet & Lifestyle (Very Important) Follow a Vata-pacifying routine: Warm, freshly cooked food Include: Cow ghee (in moderation) Milk (if digestible) Avoid: Dry, cold, processed foods Excess fasting 4. Daily Home Support Gentle foot oil massage (sesame oil or medicated oil) Lukewarm water foot soaking Avoid walking barefoot Regular but mild exercise (improves nerve signaling) Integration with Modern Care Continue: Diabetes medication Neurologist follow-up Ayurveda works best as integrative therapy, not replacement.

Namaste, Your symptoms suggest nerve involvement due to long-standing diabetes along with the after-effects of chemotherapy. In Ayurveda, this can be understood as vata aggravation affecting the nerves, leading to numbness, altered sensations, and that squeezing feeling in the legs. It is good that your blood sugar is under control, because that plays a very important role in preventing further progression. At the same time, nerve recovery is usually slow and requires consistent support, so the focus should be on nourishing the nerves and calming vata. Try to avoid very dry, cold, and irregular eating habits, as they can worsen nerve symptoms. Include warm, freshly cooked food with a little ghee, as it helps in vata balance. Foods like soaked almonds, walnuts, milk (if suitable), and green vegetables can support nerve health. Daily gentle oil massage on feet and legs can be very helpful. Use warm sesame oil or Mahanarayana taila, massage for 10–15 minutes, and if possible follow it with a warm water bath. This helps improve circulation and reduces stiffness and abnormal sensations over time. Before sleep, you can soak your feet in warm water for 10 minutes, which may reduce the squeezing sensation and improve comfort. Simple home support: A pinch of turmeric in warm milk at night can help with inflammation and nerve support. Also, try to maintain regular sleep timing, as nerve healing is closely linked with good rest. Light activity like slow walking or gentle stretching is useful, but avoid overexertion. Keep the feet protected from injury, as numbness can reduce sensation. Ayurvedic medicines with dose and timing: Ashwagandha Churna – 1 teaspoon at night with warm milk Bala Ashwagandhadi Taila – for external massage daily Ksheerabala 101 Capsules – 1 capsule twice daily after food Yograj Guggulu – 1 tablet twice daily after food These are traditionally used to support nerve strength, reduce vata imbalance, and improve sensation gradually. You may start noticing mild improvement in sensations and comfort over 4–6 weeks, but deeper nerve recovery can take longer time and requires patience. Since you are already under a neurologist’s care, continue that guidance as well, and these measures can be taken as supportive care alongside.
