IBS from last 17 years - #555
I’m 30 and have been visiting washroom after every meal from the age of 13. All treatments have given minimal benefits. Sometimes I do not feel the urge instead start feeling sleepy and headache which goes away after I visit washroom. I’ve tried gluten free and I’m on only ghar ka khana diet. Sleeping less increases symptoms. What to do? Also in the morning there’s constipation. I also have lots of bloating and tight abdomen. It’s all undigested food.

Doctors’ responses
Your symptoms suggest a significant imbalance in your digestive system, which is common in individuals with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). In Ayurveda, we emphasize the importance of digestion, known as Agni, as the cornerstone of health. The fact that you experience frequent bowel movements after meals, along with constipation in the morning, bloating, and a feeling of heaviness from undigested food, indicates a compromised digestive fire.
Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations Dietary Adjustments: While you are on a homemade diet, consider focusing on easily digestible foods that are warm and nourishing. Incorporate cooked vegetables, khichdi (a mix of rice and lentils), and spices like ginger, cumin, and turmeric, which aid digestion. Avoid raw foods and excessive dairy, as they can aggravate bloating.
Meal Timing: Eat smaller, more frequent meals instead of large ones. Allow sufficient time between meals for digestion; ideally, wait about 3-4 hours before eating again.
Hydration: Drink warm water or herbal teas (like ginger or peppermint) to aid digestion. Avoid cold drinks, as they can dampen Agni.
Lifestyle Practices: Establish a regular eating schedule to train your body. Ensure you have adequate sleep and manage stress through yoga, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises, as stress can exacerbate IBS symptoms.
Herbal Remedies: Consider taking Triphala, which can help regulate bowel movements and promote digestion. Ginger tea can be consumed before meals to stimulate appetite and improve digestion. You might also try Ajwain (carom seeds) or Fennel seeds after meals to alleviate bloating.
Ayurvedic Treatments: Panchakarma therapies, such as Abhyanga (oil massage) and Basti (medicated enemas), can help detoxify and restore balance to your digestive system. It is advisable to consult with an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized treatments based on your constitution and current health status.
Consult an Ayurvedic Practitioner Since your condition has persisted for many years with minimal relief, working closely with an Ayurvedic practitioner can help address the root causes of your IBS. They can tailor a treatment plan that may include dietary adjustments, herbal medicines, and lifestyle changes specifically designed for your individual needs.
Addressing IBS through Ayurveda is a holistic process that takes time and patience, but with consistent efforts, you can experience significant improvement in your digestive health and overall well-being.
Dealing with IBS, especially for so long, can be really tough, I get it. It sounds like there’s a mix of vata and pitta imbalance that’s affecting your digestion and overall well-being. Let’s dive into a plan that might help ease things for you.
Firstly, your lifestyle habits can make a difference. Establishing a regular routine can help stabilize vata — try waking up, eating, and sleeping at the same times daily. I know it might sound simple, but consistency can work wonders for digestion.
Your diet is super important— continue eating home-cooked meals, but aim for warm, softly cooked foods like moong dal khichdi or soups, definitely pairs better with your digestive system. Avoid raw salads, cold foods, and carbonated drinks as they can aggravate your symptoms.
Keep sipping on ginger tea through the day, as it’s fantastic for bloating and digestion issues. Just boil a few slices of fresh ginger in water, add a dash of honey if you like, and sip away.
Since you’re feeling sleepy or getting headaches post-meal, try eating smaller, more frequent meals which may prevent overloading the digestive system. Chew your food slowly and thoroughly. This might sound tedious but honestly, it can really help.
For the constipation and undigested food feeling in mornings, consider taking 1 tsp of triphala powder in warm water before bed. It’s a good gentle cleanser and it helps balance all the doshas.
Keep an eye out for triggers tthat might worsen your symptoms—stress can be one for some folks. Maybe try incorporating some yoga or pranayama into your routine to calm the mind and balance energy.
Remember, your unique constitution means it might take a bit of trial and error to figure out what works best for you specifically. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a local Ayurvedic practitioner for more personalized guidance to support your journey.
