The white part in my eye becomes blood red in color and has severe pain. Ophthalmologist prescribes prednisone for a month and 4-6 Advil's per day. It comes and goes maybe 2-3 times per 1 year for last 8 years. It's very hurtful. I don't have any joint pains. They are asking me to go to Rheumatologist. But I want to try and see if Ayurveda works. My blood reports are always normal. Just recently a couple of months back I got Hypothyroidism. Just waiting to see if it goes to normal because I don't want to take Medication for long. I take BP medication from last 3 years.

Hello I can understand suffering with this for long 8 years is very difficult but dont worry i will really help you to get a long lasting relief from this. But let me tell you, what you are describing is not just a eye issue, docters have already hinted you by telling you to visit a rheumatologist. I will briefly help you understand what is really happening with you. 🔹Ayurvedic Understanding The symptoms mentioned by you is a classical sign of raktaja abhishyanda progressing to adhimnatha -a eye condition where rakta and pitta dosha gets vitiated causing white of eye to turn blood red with pain and burning 🔹In simpler terms Your eye is having inflammatory condition of sclera where the pain is severe In most of cases it is associated with -Rheumatoid Arthritis (It can be without joint pain = Seronegetive RA) -Lupus -Vasculitis -Thyroid dysfunction (Hypothyroidism) 🔹Your Treatment Protocol During active attack When your eyes are red and have severe pain -Triphala Eye wash Boil 1 tsp of triphala churna in 2 glass of water boil and reduce to half, strain it though a cloth and make crystal clear Wash your eyes with this using eye cups 1-2 times a day It reduces pitta -rakta inflammation in eye -Rose water + raw milk compress Mix equal part of raw chilled milk and rose water, soak a cotton pad in it and place over your closed wyes This will reduce pain and redness -Cold Coriander seed water Overnight soak 1 tsp of coriander in water, starin it and drink it in morning empty stomach 🔹Internal Medication for root cause 1.Saptamruta loha 1 tablet twice daily after food 2 Mahatriphala ghrita 1 tsp morning empty stomach 3. Sarivasavam 15 ml twice daily after food 4 Avipathikar churna 1 tsp with warm water at bed time -For Hypothyroidism Start with Ashwagandha capsule 1 capsule twice daily after food Ashwagandha has been clinically proven to be effective in subclinical hypothyroidism as in your case 🔹Diet plan-Critical for you Your condition is recurring is mostly due to improper food, even if you have proper overall diet, certain pitta aggrevating food may aggrevate your eye issues so we have to be specific in diet ✅Eat more of -Pomegranate -Amla -Coconut water -Bitter gourd -Cow ghee -Coriander, fennel water -Green leady vegetables ❌Avoid completely -Fermented foods -Tomato, chillies, citrus -Refined oil -Salt in excess -Cold beverages -Potato, brinjal 🔹Lifestyle practices -Netra prakshalana Splash cold water on your eye for 10 mins daily This is dramatically reduce your frequency -Tratak 5 min of steady candle gazing will strength your eye 🔹Stress and nervous system -Do daily sheetali pranayama -Brahmi oil massage on head weekly 2-3 times -Have sound sleep for 7-8 hours daily I would like you to take a detailed full consulation where i can assess your prakriti, current vikruti and help to design a month by month personalise treatment plan Do not stop your bp medications I hope this helped you Wishing you a good health Warm Regards Dr Snehal Vidhate

Your condition deserves careful evaluation because recurrent blood-red eyes with severe pain for 8 years is not usually a simple eye problem. The fact that your ophthalmologist uses prednisone and has advised a rheumatology consultation suggests they may be considering an inflammatory condition such as uveitis, episcleritis, or scleritis. Ayurveda can be used as a supportive approach, but I strongly recommend not delaying the rheumatology evaluation. Ayurvedic Perspective According to Ayurveda, recurrent redness, burning, pain, and inflammation of the eyes can be correlated with Netra Roga involving aggravated Pitta and Rakta Dushti (vitiation of blood). Over time, Vata may also become involved, causing severe pain and recurrent episodes. The treatment principle focuses on: Pacifying aggravated Pitta Purifying Rakta (blood) Reducing inflammation Strengthening eye tissues Improving immunity and preventing recurrence Ayurvedic Recommendations Internal Support medicines commonly considered include: Mahatriphala Ghrita – supports eye nourishment and vision. Saptamrita Lauha – traditionally used for chronic eye disorders. Guduchi (Giloy) – helps support immunity and inflammatory balance. Amalaki (Amla) – cooling, antioxidant, and Pitta-pacifying. Triphala Churna – supports digestion and detoxification. Diet & Lifestyle Prefer: Fresh fruits and vegetables Amla, pomegranate, cucumber, bottle gourd Adequate hydration Cow’s ghee in moderation Regular sleep Avoid: Excessively spicy, sour, fried, and fermented foods Excessive tea, coffee, and alcohol Late-night sleeping Prolonged screen exposure during active episodes Excessive heat and direct sunlight exposure Eye Care Wash eyes with cool clean water several times daily. Wear protective sunglasses outdoors. Rest the eyes adequately. Avoid rubbing the eyes during painful episodes. Regarding Hypothyroidism Hypothyroidism can sometimes be associated with autoimmune conditions. Since your eye inflammation has been recurring for many years and hypothyroidism has appeared recently, a rheumatology assessment is worthwhile even if previous blood reports were normal. Some autoimmune disorders may not be obvious on routine blood tests. Professional Advice Because your pain is described as very severe and recurrent, please continue follow-up with your ophthalmologist and do not stop prescribed medications such as prednisone without medical supervision. Ayurveda can be integrated as supportive therapy, but identifying the underlying cause is essential to protect your vision long-term. In summary: Your presentation suggests a chronic inflammatory eye disorder with predominant Pitta-Rakta aggravation. A combination of Pitta-pacifying diet, blood-purifying Ayurvedic medicines, proper eye care, and evaluation by a rheumatologist offers the most balanced and safe approach for long-term management.

Your symptoms sound more like recurrent eye inflammation (such as Scleritis or Uveitis), which can sometimes be associated with autoimmune conditions even when blood tests are normal. Since your ophthalmologist has advised a rheumatology evaluation, it is important not to delay that assessment. Take • Mahatriphala Ghrita – 5 g twice daily with lukewarm water after food. • Saptamrit Loha – 250 mg twice daily after food with honey or ghee. • Guduchi Satva – 500 mg twice daily with water. • Triphala eye wash (well-filtered and sterile preparation only) may be used if advised by your physician. Diet Avoid very spicy, fried, sour, and fermented foods. • Include ghee, cooked vegetables, amla, and adequate hydration. • Maintain regular sleep.

••Hello. First, I completely understand your frustration. Dealing with severe, recurring eye pain that turns blood-red multiple times a year for eight years is incredibly draining—especially when you are trying to manage blood pressure and a new thyroid diagnosis on top of it. ••As a fellow practitioner of Ayurveda, I want to give you a clear, honest perspective on how we view this, how it aligns with your ophthalmologist’s advice, and what an authentic Ayurvedic approach would look like. ••The Medical Reality: Why the Rheumatologist is Crucial Before looking at Ayurveda, we must address why your ophthalmologist is sending you to a rheumatologist. Based on your symptoms—severe pain, deep “blood red” redness, recurrence over 8 years, and a response to heavy anti-inflammatories like systemic Prednisone and high-dose Advil—this points strongly toward conditions like Scleritis or severe Episcleritis. The Autoimmune Connection: Even though your blood reports have been normal and you don’t have joint pain right now, scleritis is frequently an early, isolated manifestation of an underlying systemic autoimmune or connective tissue disorder. ••The Thyroid Factor: Your recent diagnosis of hypothyroidism (which is very commonly autoimmune, such as Hashimoto’s) is another clue that your immune system’s regulation is fluctuating. ••The Risk: Scleritis can threaten your vision if left unchecked. Please do not skip the rheumatologist appointment. Ayurveda works beautifully alongside modern medicine, but we must have a precise structural and systemic diagnosis to ensure your eyes remain safe. ••The Ayurvedic Perspective: Netra Roga & Rakta-Pitta ••In Ayurveda, the eye (Netra) is considered a seat of Alochaka Pitta (the subtype of Pitta governing vision). Because your condition involves severe redness, burning or stabbing pain, and sudden flare-ups, this is a classic manifestation of high Pitta Dosha mixed with Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue) vitiation, likely presenting as a form of Raktaja Netra Roga (specifically mimicking aspects of Siraharsha or Sajvara Netra Roga with severe Shoola / pain). ••Because it has been recurring for 8 years (Chirakari), the toxins (Ama) have deeply seated themselves in the channels (Srotas) of the eyes. ••Additionally, your primary hypertension and hypothyroidism indicate that the metabolic fire (Agni) and plasma tissue (Rasa Dhatu) throughout your entire body need balancing. ••Line of Treatment (Chikitsa Sutra) An effective Ayurvedic protocol here would focus on Pitta-Rakta Shamana (pacifying the heat and blood) and Strotoshodhana (clearing the micro-channels of the eye). 1. Internal Classical Formulations (To be taken under supervision) ••To Cool the Blood & Reduce Inflammation: Formulations like Patoladi Ghrita or Mahatriphaladi Ghrita (medicated clarified butter) are excellent for chronic eye disorders. They cross the blood-retinal barrier, soothe Alochaka Pitta, and provide deep rejuvenation (Rasayana) to the ocular tissues. ••To Purify Rakta & Pitta: Herbs like Neem, Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Patola, and Sariva (Indian Sarsaparilla) are highly effective. Classical tablets like Kaishore Guggulu or Rakta Chandanadi Kwath help clear systemic inflammatory markers. ••For the Thyroid & Digestion: Since you recently developed hypothyroidism and want to avoid lifelong dependency, stabilizing your central metabolism (Jatharagni) is key. Kanchanar Guggulu or mild Virechana (therapeutic purgation) using Avipattikar Churna or Trivrit Lehya can help detoxify the liver and thyroid axis, preventing the accumulation of Ama. ••External Ocular Therapies- ••Netra Seka / Aschyotana: Washing or gently dropping a cooled, sterile decoction of Triphala, Yashtimadhu (Licorice), and Lodhra can instantly soothe burning and redness. ••Netra Tarpana: Once the acute phase subsides, creating a well of black gram dough around the eyes and pooling warm Mahatriphaladi Ghrita over them helps strengthen the optic nerves and sclera, reducing the frequency of future attacks. ••A Note on Your Medications Hypothyroidism: It is completely understandable that you don’t want to be on medication forever. However, if your thyroid hormone levels (T_3, T_4, TSH) remain significantly abnormal, your body’s overall tissue metabolism suffers, which can worsen eye inflammation. Let your body try to normalize, but support it with a strict Pitta-Kapha pacifying diet and herbs like Guduchi and Kanchanar. If a physician deems hormone replacement necessary, you can safely take it alongside Ayurveda while working to taper off later. ••Blood Pressure: Continue your BP medications exactly as prescribed. Sudden spikes in blood pressure can increase ocular pressure and worsen vascular inflammation in the eye.

Since this has been happening for more than 8 years and the pain is very severe it is important not to ignore it even if your routine blood tests are normal Sometimes recurrent inflammation in the eye can be linked with an underlying immune imbalance that may not show up in the early stages and that is why your ophthalmologist has suggested seeing a rheumatologist The recent development of hypothyroidism also makes it worthwhile to have a complete evaluation because certain inflammatory and thyroid related conditions can occur together Along with your current treatment you can support your body by following a simple and regular lifestyle Eat freshly prepared meals stay well hydrated avoid very spicy fried and processed foods and try to maintain good sleep habits Reducing eye strain from prolonged screen time and managing stress can also be helpful A personalised herbal and dietary approach may help support the body’s natural balance and may reduce the frequency of these episodes over time but it should be planned carefully with your overall health and current medications in mind especially since you are taking blood pressure medicine Please continue the treatment advised by your eye specialist during an active episode because protecting your vision is the first priority I hope you find the underlying cause and get long lasting relief from these painful attacks
