Namaste. Since you have been living with diabetes for more than 10 years and have now been diagnosed with cataract, it is important to understand that cataract is a structural change in the eye lens. At present, no Ayurvedic medicine has been scientifically proven to dissolve or reverse an established cataract. Ayurveda can play a supportive role by helping maintain overall eye health, supporting blood sugar control, improving digestion and metabolism, and reducing oxidative stress. However, it should not be considered a substitute for cataract surgery. If your ophthalmologist has advised cataract surgery, it is generally recommended not to delay it unnecessarily, especially in diabetic patients. Good blood sugar control before and after surgery is very important for proper healing and reducing complications. Supportive Ayurvedic measures may include a diabetic-friendly diet, regular intake of antioxidant-rich foods such as Amla, daily walking, adequate sleep, and appropriate Ayurvedic medicines prescribed ----My advice would be to continue monitoring your blood sugar regularly, follow your diabetes treatment, and stay in touch with your eye specialist. Ayurveda may help support your overall health, but cataract surgery remains the definitive and most effective treatment for cataract. ----Rx 1) Amalaki Rasayana – 1 tablet twice daily after meals with lukewarm water. 2) Saptamrit Lauh – 500 mg twice daily after meals with honey or as directed by the physician. 3) Triphala Churna – 3 g at bedtime with lukewarm water. 4) Mahatriphala Ghrita – 5 g twice daily with lukewarm milk/water, depending on digestive capacity. 5) Akshitarpana – May be considered under the supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic physician after proper assessment. -----Aahar (Diet): Diabetic-friendly balanced diet. Regular intake of Amla, green leafy vegetables, and seasonal fruits as appropriate. Avoid excess sugar, refined flour, fried foods, and processed foods. ----Vihar (Lifestyle): Daily walking for 30–45 minutes. Adequate sleep and stress management. Regular blood sugar monitoring and diabetic care. ----Advice: Continue prescribed diabetes medications. Maintain good glycemic control. Regular ophthalmology follow-up. Cataract surgery remains the definitive treatment for established cataract and should not be delayed if advised by the eye specialist.

••As a practitioner, I will give you a completely honest, balanced perspective based on both classical Ayurvedic principles (Shalakya Tantra) and modern clinical reality. ••The short answer is: Once a cataract has fully formed and matured, surgery is indeed the only definitive way to restore your vision. Ayurveda cannot reverse a mature cataract. ••Here is how we approach your case to prepare your body and protect your eyes: 1. Strict Blood Sugar Management (Prameha Chikitsa) We must stabilize your Agni (metabolic fire) and control Prameha (diabetes) to make you a fit candidate for surgery. ••Herbal Support: Classical formulations like Chandraprabha Vati, Vasant Kusumakar Ras, or simple daily intake of Amalaki (Amla) + Haridra (Turmeric) powder help manage systemic metabolic stress. ••Diet: Focus on Katu (pungent) and Tikta (bitter) tastes. Incorporate barley (Yava), bitter gourd, and fenugreek seeds, while avoiding refined sugars and heavy, oily foods. 2. Protecting Your Retina (Drishtiprasadana) Diabetes puts you at risk for Diabetic Retinopathy. While the surgeon changes the lens, the “screen” at the back of your eye (the retina) needs nourishment. ••Triphala Ghrita: Taking a spoonful of medicated cow’s ghee prepared with Triphala helps strengthen the optic nerve and ocular vascularity. ••Saptamrit Lauh: A classical mineral formulation used specifically to improve overall eye health and vitality. 3. Pre- and Post-Surgery Ocular Care ••Netra Tarpana: In a specialized Ayurvedic clinic, a pool of warm medicated ghee is retained over the eyes. Note: This is highly beneficial if done months before the cataract matures, or well after surgical wounds are completely healed, but never immediately around the surgery date.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, cataract can be correlated with Timira/Kacha, where gradual clouding of vision occurs due to imbalance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas, along with age-related tissue degeneration and long-standing metabolic disorders such as diabetes (Madhumeha). Can Ayurveda remove cataract? It is important to understand that once a cataract has become structurally established in the lens, Ayurveda generally cannot dissolve or reverse it completely. Therefore, if an eye specialist has advised surgery because the cataract is mature or progressing, surgery remains the most effective treatment for restoring clear vision. How Ayurveda can help Ayurveda can play a valuable supportive role by: Helping maintain overall eye health Slowing further degeneration of ocular tissues Supporting diabetic management and metabolic balance Reducing oxidative stress that contributes to eye damage Improving quality of life and post-surgical recovery Ayurvedic recommendations Diet (Pathya): Include Amla, fresh green vegetables, carrots, bottle gourd, and seasonal fruits suitable for diabetes. Use cow’s ghee in moderation if digestion permits. Stay well hydrated. Avoid excessive sweets, refined flour, fried foods, and packaged foods. Lifestyle: Maintain strict blood sugar control. Get adequate sleep. Practice gentle eye relaxation exercises. Avoid prolonged screen exposure and eye strain. Common Ayurvedic supportive therapies Triphala-based preparations Amla formulations Netra-poshaka (eye nourishing) therapies Rasayana therapy for long-standing diabetes and age-related degeneration Special note for diabetes Since you have had diabetes for more than 10 years, regular eye examinations are very important because diabetes can also affect the retina (diabetic retinopathy) in addition to cataract. Good blood sugar control is one of the most effective ways to protect vision.
